I don't remember prices for those things (you'd need a local), but when I was in Oz, living as cheaply as I could (in hostels), I spent about $30/day. When there was no immediate lack of money, I averaged closer to $50/day, $60/day when I travelled long distances (transport is definitely a big cost).

Also note that accomodation in the big cities is more in the area of $22-$28 per night (at least for the larger, cleaner hostels).

A big mac will set you back about $6 (in a combo) I think, and petrol varies depending on what state you are in.

In Queensland it's around $1.20 per litre of unleaded, currently - but I know it's higher in New South Wales.

Petrol in Melbourne is curenntly about $1.40-$1.50 a litre (unleaded). You should probably budget about $50 a day back packing. That'll be enough to do the basics and see most general sites, but if you plan on partying lots or doing expensive adventure activites (which are well worth doing in oz!!) I would probably suggest a budger of $50-$60 per day puls your accommodation.

Of course working along the way certainly helps - particularly if you get a job in a bar which includes knock-off drinks
