In the end, only you can decide if it is worth it to chuck college and go travelling. I have only this to add:

1. There is nothing stopping you from going travelling after you finish college as well. Even once you have a wife and a family. I have often encountered an impression that a lot of gap year kids have that this is their only chance to travel. That`s not true. You can keep travelling for the rest of your life, if it`s what you want to do.

2. you say "I know i could always go back to college after travelling, once ive got it out of my system" Travelling may put it out of your system, but it may just create a hunger for even more travel. Beware, it can become like an addiction! It is not a bad addiction to have though, compared to some of the more dangerous ones.

Any, best of luck. The study abroad thing seems like a good place to start, especially if you think you will have trouble geting your family on board.

I fully agree with Greg. At 18 you have the whole life before you for travelling. Just a year or two for finishing up your studies dosn't matter much.
You don't like studying anymore in a college. OK thats fine, why don't you try something like a course in travel and tourism. That will help you during your travels and also others. It may also give you some bucks.
think of this...
But leaving studies for travels just NO NO...
