My wife and myself are taking off 6 monthes starting in March 2006, to travel around the area.We both like active trips and we would like to scuba dive, surf, do some hiking and see loads of natural beauty. We are finding it difficult choosing countries and a route.
I would love to hear any ideas or comment that you have.
I just completed my Central America and a little S America this year,Jan to March and had a great time.
Started Cancun;Mex and just jumped bus appox 0800 and jumped off 1200,max 4hrs,sometimes it did'nt work like that but that also was part of the enjoyment, maybe stayed 1-2-3days then on the bus again for another 4hrs!!!!!!!!!!!
I traveled down through Belize,Guat,Hondures,El Salv,Costa R,,Nig and then Panama to the P Canal then jumped a plane to Columbia and Venz.
All I had was Lonely Planet Central America and it was more than enough, great guide book.
Fantastic trip I will never forget so if you roughly follow those guide lines then you are on your way.
Have a great CA bus trip and much more.

I have just returned last week from a 3 month trip through parts of central and south america and cuba.
If you are looking to go surfing while there I can recommend a place called Bocas del Toro. It is on the North-Western coast of Panama very near to the border with Costa Rica. It is also a nice spot to visit even if you are not going to do any surfing there.
I am planning a trip for 3 months through Latin America and this is what i have figured already....
arrive Mexico City- 4 days there
Bus to Palenque- 3 days
Bus to San Cristbal- 2 days
Bus to Guatemala, Antigua- 3 days
Bus to Honduras, Copan- 3 days
Bus to port going to Bay Islands, then 5 days there
Bus it through Nicaragua into Costa Rica, NYE in Playa Tamarindo 3 days
Then to San Jose, then flights to Ecuador....
total for Central America 1 months.
Then about 2 months seeing Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina...thats as far as i have got!!
Thank you for all your help.We will starting in Argentina in early March. The next 4 months i will be doing some serious reading.Does anyone know a good place to get quite a detailed map of the area and individual countries?
For those also in the planning stages i will post any info i recieve.
