hey i'm 20 and i have just got back from Oz today. it's brill, i am going to go back on my own for longer like 3/6 months or maybe even a year or two. I met a lot of people. Especially if you go with Oz Experience or something similar (not so much the greyhound-so ive heard!) as you are guaranteed to meet people and people in your room in hostels, most people talk, particularly if you are in the same room, then you end up going for dinner or something together.
I not a loud in your face person but i really liked travelling by myself!
You've got to do it and just go for it, you won't look back! Trust me on this one!
Agree with Michael completely, those cheap boxes of wine are a great introduction to anyone you would ever like to meet. Just take it in moderation because you wanna remember some things that you do. Cheers to the good times ahead...
Thanks guys for all your comments! It was lovely to read all those positive messages, and you're right, sometimes you just have to get on and do things and enjoy them while you can! xxx
i'm rachel from hong kong. i guess i understand magsa's situation. i've already got a working holiday visa, and haven't made up my mind to start my journey. i worry that i'll be too old to start a new career when i come back (i'm nearly 30). and many friends told me, it's not easy for me to find a job if i stop working for one year.....
but yes, you are right. i have nothing to lose. i'll regret later if i don't even start to do it. thank you for your advice.
magsa, let's meet in australia!!
It is so nice to hear there are so many of us in the same boat. I am 33 yrs old and am arriving in Oz on 31st Jan travelling the east coast. I was going to go by grehound but am not sure. I thinkl I will decide once in Cairns and see what people have to say.
I was in a ten year relationship which ended a year ago, it has been my dream to see Oz and am finally doing it. I am scared and nervous having never travelled on my own before but decided if I don't go now I never will.
It is very reassuring reading the comments from people who have done the trip and made friends and who have no regrets. It gives me reassurance and a little confidence.
The overwhelming response here seems to be 'Go for it' so adding my 2 pence worth may seem redundant but as a 28 year old Kiwi living in the UK I can tell you you only put your life on hold by NOT doing stuff. Who knows what you will find onthe other side of the world and if you have a working visa you could end up getting further ahead in your career than if you stayed at home. Take the chance. If you don't like it or find you really miss home you can always go back - you can't change your mind if you don't go!
And the only way you wont make friend is by sitting in a small dark room not speaking ot anyone. Travellers network (as this website will atest to) and you will find yourself smiling at someone struggling with a suitcase of backpack at the train/bus station and next thing you know your inthe middle of a huge conversation and taking contact details and so it all begins! Its a small world, you're never far from home but it will all pass you by if you don't getout in it!
Best of luck and travel safe to everyone who is getting out there! And smile when you see a fellow traveller - it could be any one of us here!
Im also a 29 year old and i'm off to Oz next march for 6 weeks on my own. I wouldnt worry, lots of my friends have been (some by themselves) and they said its brilliant and you meet loads of people! I think you will have a great time. Im fairly quiet myself but decided to go before im 30! :o)

I too am thinking of going to Oz on my own, it really is daunting but I think once your there, all the uncertain feelings you have will disappear. I also think the idea about the wine box is kool, will defo give that a try. I think this forum is a good port of call to contact people whom are also are alone and would like to meet up for a drink.
