Hi, I just read your posting and I'm not sure if it's too late to answer you now... Just in case not... I just went there a couple of weeks ago for a weekend.

As far as I know, there are many cheap places to stay in (if you're looking for cheap ones). The one I remember is the Borobudur hostel in Jalan Prawirotaman... and there are others too along the street.

As for sightseeing in town you can go to the Sultan's palace, Taman Sari (it used to be king's waterpark and has a tunnel that goes to Parangtritis beach, but it was clogged),... For shopping and eating you can walk along the Malioboro street and also Aip S Tubun (or Pathuk) street where you can buy some "pathuk" and other snaks. You should also try eating Gudeg, which is the famous typical food...you can find many along Malioboro or Pathuk streets.

Roam around the town by becak, a traditional vehicle pushed by a bicycle.

A bit outside town (heading east), you can go see the Prambanan temple (Hinduist) & some other small temples not so far away. It takes about an hour by car from town. I don't really know where to find a cheap transportation; the last time I just used the hotel car that costed me Rp 160,000 for 3 hours (return trip incl. driver). But I took it anyway since I didn't have much time there. You can see sunset on the site. It's nice especially if you like photography.

A little bit further north (approx. 2 hrs from town) you can go to the Borobudur temple. This one is the biggest, Buddhist temple. This is nice to see sunrise.

Anyway if my tips are too late, I hope everyone else can find them useful!

Hi Alainwee

I've been to yogyakarta around 4 years ago, it is a buys place, if I'm not mistaken it is the second biggest city in indonesia. I didn't stay there, I stayed in borobudur, which is a must see - huge temple, surrounded by 4 volcanoes, it has a weird energy - a legend says that buddha himself built the temple, not physically as it dates from 800 ad. anyhow it is a fantastic place to go, I stayed in a small guest house called pondok tingal, very simple, but clean. but very close to borobudur temple there is a hotel called manuhara, which has air con, tv and several amenities and it boards the borobudur complex, also in the same region there is the very very expensive Amanjiwo Hotel, which is stunning, I think it is one of the 6 stars hotels in the world, might be worth the visit or perhaps lunch and drinks, excellent food.

Enjoy your trip!
