I'm moving to Melbourne in a few weeks. Any tips about places to check out and things to do will be greatly appreciated.
I'm going to review as many places as possible on my Australian blog at www.under.org.uk
Either post your comments here or on my blog in the "Stuff to do in Melbourne" thread.
ps. Are there any melbourne specific forums on the net?
Melbourne has a rather excellent live music scene. Be sure to check out artists like Jess McAvoy or Wendy Rule (website is currently having problems, but should be back soon), playing regularly in various suburbs.
I loved the suburbs to the north (Carlton, Fitzroy, Brunswick) - not quite as bohemian as Sydney's Glebe, but still very vibrant. Royal Park in North Melbourne is very nice to walk through (except during the summer, when the swarms of flies will scare you away), particularly around sunset as the hordes of rainbow lorrikeets start swooping around.
Southbank is nice despite being kitsch, and I loved walking over the university grounds.
btw, your post will probably be edited to remove the url of your blog - the forum rules don't allow such, and given the large amount of spam posts this forum gets, strictness in that is a good thing.
I recently worked/lived in Melbourne for just under 6 months, and I loved it so much I'm considering moving there long term!!
It is a beautiful, very contemporary city with loads of gardens and parks everywhere. Even on the ugly industrial area going down to the Great Ocean Road has quirky and very aesthetically pleasing sculptures to keep the place from looking drab.
As a fellow blogger mentioned previously there live gigs are awesome and everywhere. I liked the drum'n'bass scene which is alive and kickin in the cruisey and very cool area of Brunswick St in Fitzroy. It is a cheap city too compared to Sydney, so make sure you eat out as much as poss.
You have amazing surf beaches on the Great Ocean Road only 1-2 hours drive a way and car rental is the best way to go (about $50 + fill the tank and put a small deposit down).
I was never bored in Melbourne, and the people are so friendly and easy going.
you should also check out st kilda/elwood area - a very eclectic mix of musos, druggies, yuppies and young people.
it is on the beach and has some really good hotels/bars such as the espy (though there is not as much music as in fitzroy where the best night life is)
and on sunday they have the esplanade market...
if you are around in the summer you should check out the events at the botanical gardens - they have shows and the moonlight cinema - which is a big outdoor movie theatre in the middle of the gardens. People take picnics and blankets and beanbags and lie on the grass watching a film.
you should go to fed square too - they often have interesting exhibitions and events.
im a melbourne girl so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask...
