I can find BOA in USA, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan (I think Mexico too)... personally I always like to use credit card.

You would be surprised how many hostels and transport take credit card...and you can pay that once a month or set up automatic payment.

I also never use travellers checks and never have. Apart from in advanced countries (where ATM etc are no problem), they are just not worth the time and hastle, in my view, although admittedly they are safe. The rules andtimes when you can change them mean that s*dds law says you will need to after banking hours on a fri, when mon?tue are a holiday, so your stuck for 4 days....

Have a couple of different bank accounts/cards, so you can use different machines and to cover loss/Theft (i have at least one of visa, mastercard and maestro - and not from the same account, as loosing one maeanse that ALL must be cancelled), and ALWAYS carry a chunk of USD which you never use as an emergency back up. If you do need to use it, replace as quickly as you can. USD are the most widely accepted around the world, and easiest to exchange. I also carry some euros, and pounds, but not as much.

Nationwide in the Uk do have free withdrawals, whilst if you can, open a citybank account. They seem to be the most global bank there is, and whilst they won`t have branches everywhere, virtually every major city on the planet has a branch. Which also helps with account queries etc.

Also, when you go to an ATM, try and get a large chunk out (to avoid charges), and stash it in several places (so if lost/stolen, it`s no big deal).
