Hi all,
Going to be arriving in christchurch on the 23rd of December and am wondering where to stay over christmas, preferably a double room in a hostel. Also whats going in Christchurch over christmas will everywhere be closed?

i spent last x=mas in christchurch and there was not a whole lot going on. i did attend mass at the citys centrel cathedral(although im not christian), and it was somewhat interesting. everything is closed, buy what you need the day before. also a hostel would be better than a hotel so as to have people to hang-out with, otherwise it may be a lonly x=mas. dunedin may be a bit more lively.

Christchurch is pretty average for Christmas. The best place to be situated, is in a backpackers around Cathedral Square in the middle of the city, to be with other travellers for a good time. No one really does a lot. Most Christchurch people are off with families or on summer holiday in Nelson on Central Otago.

Have fun

sorry! I've no idea about Stonehurst. I'm still on the waiting list for the flight as it was fully booked. There have many people going to NZ during x'mas. I spent x'mas eve in Dunedin several years ago but it was quite too. May be I was a visitor and I had no idea about their x'mas events. My friend told me that if I want to dine out on 25 Dec in Christchurh and the price would increase 50%. Anyone know any reasonable price restaurant or food courts inside malls will be still open on 25 Dec? I think I may go to city centre, at least I can see more people inside the church. Otherwise, no shops, and less people.

Hi
You should try to get to Queentowns.I was there last year xmas, it's the best place to be in NZ.
There is a top class art gallery in Christchurch, which is free, and very good.
The Base hostel is very good, thay had a live band on when I was there last year.
