Hello - I did the same thing 11 years ago and had the same questions - eventually I did it alone and it was fab. I went for 4 weeks and spent 3 months there. If it can be done in a time of no credit cards, no mobile phones, no internet and be safe it sould be a dream now. SE Asia is well geared up for back packers you'll have a ball.

Book the trip, or book a small one for the first couple of weeks to get you used to being away from home and being on your own.

Im exactly the same, ive booked a world trip, never camped out in my life, never travelled alone, and am scared to death, so ive booked an organised tour for the first couple of weeks .. at least that way i wont worry too much ...

Do whatever makes you happy .. it is your trip!!!

Good luck

I'm off to SE Asia in January with a friend, we were originally looking at an organised tour. But after reading up on the area we dicided going alone was best. We can do what we want when we want.

We arrive end of January so if you are lonely just message through here and we'll happily meet up.

Hi

My advice is NOT to do a tour. They are very expensive and by doing it yourself you'll spend half the amount of money they say! I always look at their brocures just to get ideas for itineries etc, but I was shocked at the prices!

You'll also be bound to your tour and wont be able to spend longer amounts of time in places that you like. I've met countless people who are gutted the night before they have to leave a cool place just because they are on a tour. Thailand and Malaysia full of backpackers, there are internet cafe's everywhere and really good local travel agents on every street. Its not hard.

I was very scared when I landed in Mumbai - especially after all the agro of being late, missing connecting flights, lifts and so on. But now 3 weeks in Im soo glad I did this. Its been an experience - but I know Im capable of anything now.

Read my diary if you like. Its on this site.

i suggest you do it alone if you have time on your hands. its so much better to find your way around (and much more rewarding) by associating with locals and fellow tourists alike. just make sure to check information before you take the plunge, as it helps to have a background that doin it blindly (that would be way too much adventure).

some people travel, taking into account the worst case scenario; others travel with thoughts of wonderful things to see, etc; sometimes, people give advice of a place they have been umpteen years ago...the list goes on.

we chart our travels to confirm our pre-suppositions of a place...for instance, we think that every russian revels in drunken vodka party, and in vietnam u can find stray dogs in the streets;in india, you find everyone pee-ing by the roadside; in thailand every sweet young thing that u see pass-by is a mobile ATM machine...

That's the beauty of travelling...and if u travel alone ( which I still do, considering my age now!), u are able to make unbiased judgements, and u come off a better person in life! So go for it...the world may not be an oyster but there are many good souls out there...
