I posted this in the postcard thread, but thought it was worthy of it's own... post. (That is far too many uses to the word post in one sentance if you ask me)

=====================================
I love the idea of postcards and everyone sending them, I have a few that showed up too!

But I want people to consider an alternative. There is a plant known as Kenaf. And the market is in the starting stages but it is growing.

Kenaf (Hibiscus canabinus L.) is an annual, non-wood fiber plant related to okra and cotton. It is native to central Africa. It can grow to heights of 12-18 feet in a 150-day growing season. It requires few or no pesticides or herbicides, depending on where it is grown. Kenaf can be grown throughout the southern US.

Kenaf can produce 5-10 tons of dry fiber per acre. The plant has two types of fiber--the outer, bast fibers (about 1/3 of the plant) and the inner, core fibers (about 2/3 of the plant). Generally, these two parts have separate applications.

It is a great alternative to tree-paper. So it would be great if people wanted to do their part to make a sustainable future for the children of this world and buy kenaf postcards instead of tree postcards.

Thanks
From your friendly neighborhood armchair activist.

still you need to cultivate kenaf, make paper out of it, print it and eventually sell/buy them.

what about a postcard-collage made out of pictures taken out of free tourist attractions brochures or different tickets used by you during your journey?

Well I think the idea is, Kenaf has a much higher rate of growth. You can make more pulp faster. You can either clearcut a forest, plant again and wait 50 years. Or harvest your crop of Kenaf once a season.
