I'm 22 and looking to study at a language school in xela, Guatemala before I start my adventures in south america. Having trouble choosing a school to suit me, since there seems to be so many offering the same thing. Any recommendations or anyone else planning to do the same thing? Terribly bored with life and my job, need to get out quick.
As I just posted to the other Paddyboy;(Bobalugats), the best place I found for nightlife, beachlife and "Sponola class's" was in Bocas del Toro in Panama, just over the Costa Rica Caribbean border which is a long stroll for you if starting out in Guatemala.
It was 18$US for 2hrs,a lot cheaper than Antigua and they concentrated on everyday words not nouns, verbs etc and class's where AM or PM for 2-4hrs and you had the beach with its no-bikini chics to study on afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a great CA and SA trip and enjoy your travels.

I can't speak for Xela, but I took spanish classes in Antigua guatemala. I really enjoyed my stay there, but it depends what you are looking for. Antigua is extremely touristy. It has fantastic nightlife and lots of tourists (if you're looking for a companion). Xela is better if you want a more indegenous experience, its a lot farther north and has a very different vibe to it. There are tons of schools in Antigua all inluding home stays. Let me know if you need any more info.
all the info on xela you'll require.
