-I know its monsoon season during this time but will the weather get very rough in places like Penang and Langkawi? The real monsoon season is on the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia and the west coast like Penang and Langkawi is dry!

I took the express buses from Puduraya bus station in K.L to Singapore. I took 2 companies, but the one i recommend is the company called 'NICE Executive Express Coach'. It should cost about RM60 to Singapore. It has average pricing, and is well worth it if you can't get a flight by airasia. Remember, always buy your tickets in advance, and NEVER NEVER buy the ticket off the first person you see. I thought i would save some money on my trip back from Singapore to KL, so i took a Singapore bus to Johor in malaysia, and when i was at the johor bus depot, i was swarmed by different bus companies that i got it from the friendliest person there. BIG MISTAKE. It was a bad ride back, so be careful.

Here is a quick search on the web. Enjoy

Penang and Langkawi will be OK in Dec, the only problem is they will be quite busy as its school holidays plus Christmas holidays, and at that time people go to the west coast rather than the east.
You don't state your budget for hotels. In Penang try the Malaysia Hotel or the Continental which are next to each other, and are about RM90. But many hotels do increase their rates during peak season. If you want cheaper places, try along Lebuh Chulia.

- What is the best way to get from KL to Singapore

Fastest and cheapest is by bus, they run every 30 minutes from Pudu Raya bus station. Or you can take the VIP bus from the old railway station. Alternatively the train, but its slow.

-and from Singapore to Penang?
Bus is again the fastest. From Spore you have to pay in S'pore dollars so if you are on a budget, its cheaper to get the bus from Spore Queen St to Johor Baru bus station in M'sia, and then take a bus from JB to Penang

-how is Penang on new years? know of some good places to go?
Quite lively. The main action is along Guerney Drive.

-do i need any vaccinations if im not heading into the wop wops?
No

-how is the shopping in KL? can i get taylored stuff made? wheres some good places to go in KL in terms of sightseeing or nightlife? any places we should avoid?

Shopping is plentiful. Tailored stuff is available in lots of places, try Pertama Complex on Jln Tunku Abdul Rahman, or places like globe silk store or kamdar. Otherwise try China town, or BB Plaza at Bukit Bintang.

Sightseeing go to KLCC Twin Towers, China town, LIttle INdia, the old colonial buildings around Merdeka Sq. If yu have time go to Batu Caves, 12 km to the north.

-any festivals worth seeing around this time?
No

Have fun!

Hi,

I think most of your questions/queries have been answered..just to add: dont worry about the monsoon, the sea is okay around this time in Langkawi...it is good to firm up your lodging plans cos it is year end, and holiday period.

cheers

When we were in KL, we stayed in a place called Eight, it's not that far from the bus station, and it's really nice. It's recently been done up, and it very modern, it's worth a look. I think we found it on www.hosteloworld.com, if not, put it into google, and i'm sure you'l find it. In Singapore we stayed in Hangout Hostel, it's new aswell, and really nice, no bunkbeds, and free internet!!

No idea what Penang will be like at NY, we were there in August, and would have stayed longer if we had time.

Didn't really like KL as a city, too big and noises and the taxi drivers are bloody annoying!!

Hope this helps

Rhiannon

the bus fare from KL to Singapore is around RM30 to RM35. do not pay for more unless it is eve of public holiday and public holiday. by bus travel from KL to singapore is around 5 hours, even take fly is around this time, it just you feel much more comfortable. from Penang to KL i think is around this price for bus fare.
