Me and my wife are going to travel around Thailand and Malaysia in December 2005. We´d like to visit Ko Tarutao before going to Malaysia. Anyone been there? Experience? Is it worth to visit?
We are going to Langkawi after Ko Tarutao. Should we go from Satun to Langkawi by boat or first go to Hat Yai and cross the boarder from there? Are there something important(customs etc.) we should know about crossing the boarder?
Thank you once again!
I will give you the benefit of my experience from Phuket to Langkawi and vice versa...a sailing trip on board an ocean racer.
I set sail from Langkawi at 4am, and arrived in Lamphrao (Phuket)8am (about 26 hrs later)...we stopped by Taratao to buy fresh seafood to cook on board ( three of us handled the racer for charterer in Phuket in preparation for the Phuket Governor's Cup regatta). Nice diving area. .You will see sea gypsies and seaside villages.
Thai govt opened up Satun at the second base for sail boats..the first was Au Chalong (Phuket ) where you do all the immigration & customs formaliies. When Malaysia pushed aggressively Langkawi to woo yachters, Thailand opened up Satun...so in Satun you can also now get the formalities done.No hassle, the boatmen will help you. Travel by land to Satun from Hatyai, and then hop into one of the boats (no, you wont get sail boats, though!) for Langkawi.
You can also get boat from Phuket to Langkawi, and if you do, it will be an exciting trip...seeing sunrise and sunset, passing by some islands, like Lanta (where there is a wonderful resort with fine white sands. But painfully long sea trip with rolling waves and gusty winds!
I've been to Taratao and it is nice, worth a visit. Do the trip to Crocodile Cave and climb the hill behind HQ for sunset.
Its easy to travel by ferry from Satun to Langkawi. You do all the immigration formalities at the jetty, before leaving and then on arrival at Langkawi.
I haven't been ko Tarutao ,but all the answer given by the 3 TP members are the answers based on their experienced so you can take as a guideline for you to come over here.Langkawi is a beautiful island so many hotels available and you can rent a car to go around the island bargain for a better price, beside a car motorcycle and bicycle also available .For your safety is better to rent a car.Food you will have no problem here more or less whatever you can get in Thailand. If you are from Hat Yai cross the border to Kangar either by taxi or bus then to Kuala Perlis for a boat(ferry)to Langkawi. So you still have time to collect more information on this beautiful island, you are wellcome and will enjoy yourself here.Selamat Datang.
