Best to ask the phone company and I think it depends if you are on pre paid or contract. I know that my optus pre paid phone in Oz had a international lock on it, but I think ( it was a while ago ) because I had, had the phone for a year I was able to ring up and get a pin that was meant to unlock the international bar but unfortunately it didn't unlock it and I ran out of time to sort it out.

Hi There !
Is it a CDMA or a GSM phone ?

A cdma phone should be able to be used on Telecom NZ
and a GSM phone on Vodafone NZ

if its a GSM phone and its SIM Un-Blocked you can get
a Voda NZ Prepaid SIM card to use in NZ
you can buy a start up pack ( sim card and number )
from Voda NZ or large appliance stores eg DSE

If its a CDMA phone you may be able to get Telecom NZ
to connect it if its an approved model for TNZ

cheers
Steve

On contract: yes; on prepaid: no.

The last comment is untrue.

I had a pay as you talk phone in Australia on Vodafone, and it worked perfectly in New Zealand, it cost alot to use, and once the credit is used up, you have no way of adding more credit, but it definetly worked, and we even recieved text messages from the UK. The other option is to buy a NZ sim card, they're cheap and easy, and then you don't have to worry about running out of credit or anything.

Hope this helps.

Rhiannon

Just get your service provider to activate International Roaming, assuming you are on a contract.
