Andy, never had in your mind to traverse from Madras to Singapore? Less flights would do you better or you'll miss something along the way...routing along Mekong River is among the most famous journey in SE Asia where you'll see many things there (according to the travel guide books), if you want to move eastward when you arrive Indo-Chine.

Madras is located in South India. So:

Madras -> Calcutta ->Dhaka(Bangladesh) -> Mandalay or Yangon (Myanmar)it's up to you ->Chiang Mai ->Bangkok -> (Through flight)Malaysia -> Singapore

Good luck and bon voyage!

The truth is: you can't get everything into your first sight of your first trip! I understand many tourist are rather amid, somehow keeping oneself in certain fewer places will help you to 'feel and see' more (insights) of one country/people/culture.

Which guide books? Many would suggest you to take this or that travel guide and etc, I personally would advise you to state your objective of travelling first - what would you want to get from this journey and why? Understanding your purpose will do you better in the onward forth planning. (well, a journey without planning is absolutely interesting and more adventurous - that's in my definition of 'travelling' rather than 'touring')

Books and websites would be very helpful. Come across those experienced travellers would be resourceful too.

Good luck, Andy!

Cheers cikusang!

Im definitely going to be doing travellin, as apposed to touring! wanna go at my own pace, i dont like to be rushed around!!

How long would it take to traverse through ..

Madras -> Calcutta ->Dhaka(Bangladesh) -> Mandalay or Yangon (Myanmar)it's up to you ->Chiang Mai ->Bangkok -> (Through flight)Malaysia -> Singapore

..like u suggested? Im looking into that possibility, but i cannot seem to get a grasp on the times/distances inbetween each destination etc...

cheers for all your advice so far!!
