hi! i'm planning a 2 mo. trip to nz. i'm having difficulty deciding between magic bus or kiwi experience. I'm 62 yrs. old, i like to have fun, but this trip is to enjoy the scenery, beaches and getting to know more about the country & its' people. I enjoy hostelling in the u.s. & understand the nz hostels are good. any comments and/or suggestions?
I would suggest the Magic bus. I did Kiwi and it was a mixed bag in terms of who is on the bus, although you get older people on the buses. I would say it is far more geared towards people who want to get drunk etc.
You are far more likely to be with like minded people on Magic bus. There is also a company called Stray which is supposed to quite good too.
Unless you like to party that is.
[People will get sick of me singing the praises of Stray travel] -
Anyway I love these guys! Would do their passes any day over Magic (which is the only other one I've tried).
Stray seems to be focused on getting out there - into the wildlife, scenery, culture etc... they seem to be very relaxed in the smaller places - though if you want there is always a chance to party in the big cities (though you definately dont have to)
Please check these guys out http://www.straytravel.co.nz - you never know - I may catch up with you on one of their buses in the not too distant future
