Mozza has indicated that this thread is about Chile

Hello, I'm a female travelling alone in South America arriving BA 9th Nov, travelling South and leaving via Santiago end of Jan. I've read from the guide books that at this time of year accommodation can get really booked up. Do I need to book in advance? And if I do how long in advance? I'm also uncertain how to do it as my Spainish is no where near good enough for a phone booking so I'm worried I'll be left with only the street to sleep on. Is booking accomodation via the internet possible for most places?

Thanks Anna

This page on the travellerspoint website las some places that speak english and you can make reservations with. Because of the busy season, I recomend that if you do make a reservation, make sure you call a couple of times to confirm the reservation before you arrive so there are no suprises. Santiago ha a lot of posibilities for lodging so the street will not be necesary.

Book it on the internet (hotel or hostel or whartever) and book it well in advance for this time of the year as it is nearing high season. When I turned up in BA I only had my first 3 nights accomodation booked over the internet and boy did I regret not booking any more. I had no idea I was arriving in the middle of school holidays, so I really struggled in my first month for accomodation and constantly moved from place to place when I had to.

I found Ushuaia particularly busy at this time of the year. If phone booking in Spanish makes you nervous, try http://www.hostelworld.com. I used them a lot, and it made the booking process pain-free. If you are going to book more than five hostals, it's worth buying the membership to avoid the per/booking fee.

There are other online hostal booking sites, this is the only one I have experience with. I booked more than 20 South American hostals through them and never had a problem with a reservation.

I assume you meant hostelworld Joshua - hostalworld just goes to an unused website. In fact, the budget accommodation booking engine on Travellerspoint is powered by Hostelworld, so booking here would have the same effect. :)
