I vote against either signatures or avatars. Too much clutter that distracts from the conversation. One of the reasons I like TP is how simple it is.

However, I can live with an icon size flag or a small icon or a one line signature under your login.

I remember this discussion from ages ago! :) There are a few reasons for not having added something like this yet...

1 would be broad use and conformity: ie. although some members (and we're talking a pretty small percentage) would understand how to have an avatar hosted elsewhere and then link to it, however the functionality on TP is generally intended to be of the kind that anyone, anywhere on any internet connection should be able to use/view satisfactorily. That would mean having avatars hosted on Travellerspoint in principle and most likely standard avatars. I know in design/web developer forums it's a popular thing, but that is a very different kind of audience.

Another reason would have to be speed when accessing the forums. Having travelled in some pretty obscure places with some pretty terrible internet connections, there's nothing worse than that not being the case when you access a website.

Yet another is the "content vs. surroundings" issue (did I just make up that term?) :) Ie. content is the main focus of the forums as we see it. That means that anything detracting from that (even links within our own site) is generally a pretty hard sell on both Pete and me (notice how there are no big ad blocks/banners plastered over the site and it's not from lack of trying by every single ad agency out there!). In the current design, I just don't see it working. One of the issues we have in our 'roadmap' for next year is a major site redesign which will allow for some changes but I still would imagine avatars not being part of this. Little flag icons is a idea I think is fantastic. Straightaway adds a learning component to the mix when a flag pops up that you have no idea where it's from :) The redesign is a long process though, since we're talking tens of thousands of pages of which a few hundred that have to be tested thoroughly across at least 5 browsers or so....

Something like a signature might be an option available based on member title. Opening it up to everyone just invites a ton of spam for no particular benefit

Last but not least, I have to say I for one like the fact that nothing is overdone in the forums, ie. we DON'T have some of the (useless ?) stuff that so many other forums have. What we DO have is great members like you guys that provide top notch information and help out literally tens of thousands of other members as well as millions of viewers (over 4 million pages are viewed each month on TP!) with great advice, tips and recommendations!

A lot of the time, less can definitely be more

Sam runs off to see in which Business Week he got that inspirational sales jargon...

Excellent. I see you guys have weighed the issue well, and after presenting those reasons, I have to say I agree with you all. Flags I think would probably be the farthest we should take it, but I understand how much work goes into keeping this site going, so if it is too much work, I understand. Thanks for clearing that up, and keep up the exceptional work! TP for life yo!;)

Quoting Sam I Am

over 4 million pages are viewed each month on TP!

I think that is mostly CupCake, Isa, Heen and a few other key suspects in the line up.

Okay I am going to photoshop some images to show what TP "could" look like. It doesn't need to me crazy, and annoying like all of the signatures and avatars people are refering...

You will see... oh yes... you will see.

I know I have held up my end of that page count!!!!

Well, this should be interesting to see what B comes up with... A man on a mission!!!

I still like the small flag idea. As mentioned previously, I look up country flags all the time. As Sam stated, having the icon under someone's username (and country?) would also work as a good learning tool. I'm surprised how often I am wrong about someone's national flag.

Ahhemm... I believe I was the one that suggested we could learn quite a bit if we posted flags under their names.

Yes! The spotlight has returned to me! Victory!

Or maybe for default, put a flag of their nation underneath their names. Could be interesting to learn all the different flags of different countries. Just a thought.

So right you are Travis!!! You did mention the learn thing first. My apologies for not looking back farther than Sam's reponse.

You have been victorious! And, I agree with both of you - FLAGS ARE COOL!!!

I'm for the flag too!

But should we have the flag for the citizenship or the location of the member, or both?

I vote for none....TP is streamlined....simple...yet elegant...if it isn't broke...DON'T FIX IT!!!

I don't like the whole "Don't fix it it ain't broke" idium. So I went and made a rendition of what could be possible.

Enjoy.
