Im planning a trip to Elat, Israel but i plan on renting a jeep and driving into Jordan to visit petra and other sites. But im getting mixed reviews. Half the people i speak to say to go visit Jordan, the other half warn me against it. It would be a shame if i couldnt go, so i was wondering if there was anyone out there who has been or lives in either Israel or Jordan and can tell me if there are any hot spots to avoid? also is there a website that has updated information of dangerous zones around the world.
Very good questions, I am wondering the same thing for my travels so whoever posts, thanks in advanced.
Jordan is a beautiful country and safe, so please do go. However, you canNOT rent a jeep in Israel and then drive it into Jordan... so you'll have to arrange to rent the jeep in, say, Aqaba.
But cross at the Arava Border just 15-minutes from downtown Eilat - very easy and you get your Jordanian visa on the spot.
Petra is amazing - enjoy - and have a drive in Wadi Rum. But I'd suggest engaging a local guide to go along with you, as you wouldn't want to get lost in there!
As long as you are going - be sure to see Kerack and the mosaic floor in the church at Madaba and the excavations/reconstructions at Jerash and more...
The question I have back at you is this: while you say you are going to Eilat, are you also visiting the rest of Israel?
