Hi,
I will be travelling to thailand for 2 weeks in Jan on my own (female). I will mainly be staying in chiang mai (4 days) and koh pha ngan (full moon party, 5 days).

Any advice on the best places to stay where I am likely to meet other western travellers of a young age (20 - 30)?

I am a bit concerned about travelling and going out to places on my own..

any advice greatly appreciated :)

There are many decent hotels in Chiangmai, this hotel is one I have use 3 times over the last 7 years. There are other hotels in this area that are a little cheaper and some a little more expensive. MONTRI HOTEL, 2-6 Ratchadamnoen Road, Thapae Gate, Chiangmai. A/C, TV, HW, private toilet/shower. E-mail address: montri_hotel@hotmail.com or use www.norththaihotel.com/montri.html. I only stay in hotels that have individual security boxes, this is one reason I chose Montri Hotel.

Hotel is located right across from the Thapae Gate, internet shops nearby, good restaurants nearby. Within walking distance of the night market. Lots of travel agencies available offering tours and transportation to many places. There are many young backpackers in this area.

Good luck.

The email address does not show the "underline" between montri and hotel. It should be montri_hotel etc.

in 1992 a group of tourists staying in the Paradise Bungalows on Haad Rin Beach (in Koh Phangan) decided on the night of the full moon that Haad Rin was the best location in the world to view the moon. They organized a party to celebrate the full moon. The following month the party expanded to the other nearby Haad Rin bungalows. Now the party attracts as many as 12,000 party people from all over the world each month!

The party begins when the sun sets and the moon rises. The town of Haad Rin is open all night with the restaurants, bars and shops catering to those in attendance. The crowds don't usually fill the beach until midnight or later. The party lasts until the following day. Even as late as 11 AM the next day the venues are still pumping out the sounds tith the dancing still going.

Now u know what is full moon party. Be warned: drugs, etc...

have fun!

You should see the full moon party one time. But be aware that its not anymore what it used to be. 10 years ago it was 105 foreigner and 90% Thai people. nowit is 95% foreigners and 5% thai. the 5% thai are mostly "working" women catering to all the drug heads. It can get a bit crazy with so many people off their heads. Ive seen more than one nasty fight there with people who had to be brought to hospital.

So be warned. It can be a bit much for soem. Nevetheless, you find the right place and you can still have a great time. Its just that it really has turned into a complete touristy party.
