I´ve spent christmas away from home twice so far, once in Canada and the other time in Australia. Both times it was great, sure I couldn´t be with my family, but it definitely was a wonderful experience to celebrate christmas in another country. In Germany for example we have a fairly basic christmas dinner (sausages and salad) on the 24th and also give the presents to eachother on that night. In Canada I had the traditional turkey dinner on the 25th and in Australia it was a whole different story as we had a huge christmas lunch on the 25th and spent almost the whole day on the beach. I was used to have cold weather and snow at christmas and it was quite surreal to go surfing with other backpackers instead ;).
This year I´m looking forward to another christmas in the southern hemisphere, can´t wait to find out how they celebrate it in Central America!
I can imagine you might not be able to celebrate christmas the same way as you would at home, but isn´t that what also makes travelling to foreign countries special .

I've spent Christmas away from home several times, but not away from family. After my mother passed away, neither my dad nor I could be around all the normal holiday celebrations, as it was my mother's favorite. Instead, we chose to do the "tropics" thing, since Dad lived in Minnesota and I in Illinois. We realized it wasn't the holiday itself that mattered, it was who you celebrated it with that did. Now my dad is gone too and I spend Christmas with my husband's family. I love them dearly, but it forces me to deal with the holiday in the traditional way and I'm miserable from November to January. Such is life. (Oh, I wasn't married at the time my dad and I did our holiday travels.) But, one of these days - I will see my tropic holidays again!

Enjoy the people who will be sharing Christmas with you. If you get that turkey and pudding, all the better. But, it's the company you keep that make the holidays bright! ;)

Im not looking forward to it.

Gonna have a massive Christmas session in Sydney, gonna put on the air conditioning, make it as cold as possible and roast a big turkey. None of this beach Christmas rubbish, barbecued turkey and the likes, hell no; not me....thats the power of denial.
