Many thanks to the helpful folks who have answered my recent questions! Here's another.

We will be hiking the Routeburn Track in January, westbound from Queenstown/Glenorchy to The Divide. We would like to explore Milford Sound and Fiordland after the Routeburn, but our car will be sitting in Queenstown. The return trip to Queenstown is long, and public transport has a limiting schedule.

So I have a fanciful idea: I would love to arrive at the western end of the Routeburn, at The Divide, and find our car there, with our off-trail luggage in it. I imagine there might be outfits in Queenstown who'd be willing to make this drive for us, if we could agree on a price. There might be locals who'd do it too, though I'd want some kind of assurance of trustworthiness before I give someone my keys.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Any ideas who I could contact? So far I've sent inquiries toBuckley Transport and Info & Track.

I'd also love other creative ideas of how to tackle the problem. Another thing I'm considering is busing or hitching from The Divide to Milford Sound, spending the next day kayaking in Milford Sound, and then flying from Milford Sound back to Queenstown that afternoon. That gets expensive, but the flight is supposed to be beautiful.

Many thanks for any advice!

More about New Zealand

Rarely has a country been so effectively promoted by a feature film as New Zealand has. The Lord of the Rings trilogy has imprinted images of New Zealand into the minds of millions. The epic proportions of the film are perfectly enhanced by the epic proportions of New Zealand's landscape. This is a country for adventure sports and photo cameras.
