Hi guys..
I'll be going to Hongkong (3days) this end of the month and I'm planning to extend for 3-4 days to be able to visit other cities in China (especially the great wall).

This would be my first time to go out of the country and I'll be traveling by myself.

I need help on almost everything.. Tips..
I only have small budget but i definitely want to enjoy the spots and cities..

By the way, I'm going to this trip because I won a trip todisney land and hongkong for 3 dasy to 2 nights. And I thought that i'll extend to take the oppurtunity to explore china.

WHat can you suggest (place to stay, visit, fiestivals, etc..)? or maybe a group or somebody will go there at this date maybe I could join you..

thanks.

The great wall is MILES from hongkong. it's up above Beijing! it's a hell of a trip by train to get there, so the only viable option is to fly. Dunno how much that costs, but sinnce you're on a budget....

sounds like you underestimate the scale of China to be honest.
check this:
http://www.seat61.com/China.htm

hongkong -> shanghai: almost 24 hours.
shanghai -> beijing : 12 hours.

a day and a half just to get to Beijing

actually theres a hongkong-> beijing train direct - over 24 hours though. each way. sounds punishing if you wanna see the great wall too. unless you fly.
good luck!
K

  1. 3's trip is waaaaaay too expensive. Good grief about the prices!

  2. 2 has good advice... The Great Wall is very far from Hong Kong! Did you take a look at the map?

You could get a train from Guangzhou/Shenzhen to Beijing instead of the (more expensive) international train from Hong Kong if you like, but it'll still take you at least a couple of hours more than 24 hours to get to Beijing. Or get a good discounted plane ticket from Guangzhou/Shenzhen to Beijing and you'll save a lot of time, but you might have to spend a bit more money for that.

Thanks for the replies..

It doesnt matter if its tiring.. I lyke to travel hard..
ANd its okie if I got to other cities before reaching beijing from hongkong..

Hai.. I know that its miles away.. but getting there is half the fun..

any other way that I could get there? except airplane..

I still think you underestimate the journey time.
You want to expand your trip by 3-4 days.
At worst on the 3 day trip, you spend 26hours getting to Beijing, 26 hours getting back to Hong Kong and 20 hours in Beijing. I know you can sleep on the train etc, but you will be running around like a headless chicken to get to the Wall and back. And what if you get delayed???
You're mad to even consider this by train.
I'm going to be in China next year - for 6-8 weeks. Into and out of HongKong, -> shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an and then heading back towards HK again via the 3 gorges. I fully expect to take at least a week to get to Beijing, and the best part of a week there too.

Good luck to you if you manage this. Must be some Phileas Fogg blood in you somewhere if thats the case!

No to any other method of travelling, the buses will NOT be faster than the train. Nothing will be faster than the train other than the aeroplanes. So is that answer decisive enough for you?

  1. 5 is right, you're SERIOUSLY underestimating the travel time. PLEASE go and look at a map and see how big China is and how far Hong Kong is from Beijing and the Great Wall.

I'm sorry, I meant #6 not #5.

hi lunaticus, train travel is very far fr Hong Kong to China, but I do met a few in Beijing taking a train back to HK... the train will reach directly in Hung Hom train station.

Find this website, hope it helps.
