If you take the international train to Beijing and back, you'll have just enough time to see Beijing properly instead of rushing around like a decapicitated domestic fowl.

I just did the train from Beijing to Hong Kong. It's not too bad. It leaves in the early afternoon in Beijing and arrives early afternoon in Hong Kong. Beds are not exactly comfortable, but it's passable. The tickets were around 600 RMB for a sleeper in dorm setting.

Im flying to Beijing on 18 November via HK. Staying there for 3 days before flying back to HK. Planning to do the Wall at Badaling which is 40km north of Beijing - have been told to get the local bus to the wall. After experiencing bus journeys in Goa, Im now ready for the Beijing bus trip!!! And quite looking forward to it. Im staying in the Saga youth hostel in DongCheng district - its works out fairly cheap. And is seemingly central to everything, like the Lama Temple and the forbidden city and Tianamen square. Which is what Im going to experience when there.

I strongly suggust my birthplace,ZhejiangProvince, which is a incredible area, beautiful scenery,Southern culture like flowing waters, little bridges(stone or wooden or bamboo ect),people living in traditions, great food(Zhe food),also its one of the most develeped provinces,u can enjoy the morden life(but not as good as in Shanghai, whichs just next to Zhejiang),maybe Hangzhou,Wu Village,Shaoxing,Ningbo,Wenzou,Jiaxing,JinHua,Yiwu, ect(the biggest feature is average developed and all with many traditions places of interest and shops, not like other provinces in China,u know the poorest city in Zhejiang is also the 31th richest in China,i mean because government lets east get rich first, its a condition),in fact the most famous must be WestLake, though i think some are even better.Well,if u come u will know,or u can first go to some websites to have a forelook.
But if ur on a baget,i think among several choices,Great Wall seemed
to be the worst one, because its farthest,u can go east,Canton(Guangdong)--Fujian--Zhejiang(or Taiwan could be included);also u can go west,Canton--Yunnan--Tibet(or Sichuan could be included),look at Map of China,u will find Beijing is a little far,if u ask me,i think eastern and western parts are both stylish, but i havent been to the middle part,so i dont know if its worth to take ur first experiance. But one is for sure, just enjoy urself,u will always catch shining spots during ur tour, though maybe u have to forget the Great Wall.
