Emily_Oz has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hi. I am 19 and travelling to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji over 6 months starting in Sydney in February 2006. I am travelling with a friend and we are planning on working to gather some extra money for a couple of months. I was wondering if anyone knew how easy it was to rent a flat or something and how much it would cost roughly ? We would prefer to have somewhere more permenant as a base as staying for a while. I'd really appreciate any advice as we dont fancy spending the whole duration in a hostel in Sydney

Cheers, Em x

Gday Emily,

My tip would be to look in local newspapers for share accommodation.

If you rent a flat you would need references, and probably a job (people with jobs get preference over people without). Also a flat would cost you anywhere from $150 to $300 a week to rent.

If you just rent a room (as in share acm) you could be looking at only $100 a week. Then you wouldn't have to worry about furnishing thw flat you rent etc etc. You could also just rent one room and share that with your friend (depending how close you are).

That's my suggestion anyway.

But hostels are pretty cool in Sydney, and cheaper the longer you stay. Plus you'd meet heaps of people if you stayed at a hostel. Check out the Y hotel in Sydney.

Sue.

Thanks for you're help Sue that was really appreciated. we are planning to work so hopefully that will help us out. We just preferred the idea of having a flat while we are there working as more of a base for us both, as we will more than likely be spending the duration of the rest of our trip in hostels around Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Are you in Australia now ? I'e heard a lot about the 'Wake Up' hostel. is that good ?

Hey Emily-i stayed at the wake up hostel for my week in Sydney, it is really clean, people are nice. The staff are great too. They are a bit more on the pricey side.As i'm going to be going back and will be in Sydney for quite some time i'm not sure about staying at wake up for the full duration.

The side bar is excellent, they do arrange trips and pub crawls etc, which seem pretty good.

The only down side personally is the kitchen-it was tiny, considering the amount of people staying there. From what i saw the equipment was not that clean and it didnt seem to be fully equipped. Everything else was really clean, the showers are great-dont know about you but that is quite important to me, it makes me feel more at home! lol!

Wake Up is one we've been recommended in central Sydney I doubt our budget will allow us to spend much time there though like you say, but most people who have been tell us all of the hostels even the cheaper ones are generally clean and a lot better than here in England anyway as they are all set up for the demanding travellers ! Thank you for your advice, are you going to be there when I go or not ? I'm like you, a good clean shower is very important so that was good news ! Some of our travels will be on camping trips which is rather scary as havnt even been camping in England let alone in Oz with the much wider variety of weird and wonderful creepy crawlies ! Hope I make it home alive ! I'll be making sure I only go in safe water thats for sure !

I'll be going out to Oz at end of Jan-early Feb. If your out there then keep in touch and we can meet up.

Family holidays we use to stay in our camper van but it wasnt like proper camping. Before i went out there people and myself included wondered how i was going to get on 'roughing' it, but it isnt really like that.

When i did the surf trip i camped-although we stayed in a room but i loved it, it was only for 3 nights but its all experience! Surfing was brill.

I meet up with someone in sydney who was staying in Maze backpackers i think it was and he said it was a mess, altho it's cheaper-but i never went there.
