sophos has indicated that this thread is about Brazil

Hi, my friend and I are travelling to South America for 4weeks. Buenos Aires, Peru and Brazil. We are both blonde females and were wondering where to stay in Rio and where are the danger spots. Any advise is great!

Hi, in Brazil you can found backpackers but is not so usual like in AUS and NZ.
I think the best option to you is some cheap and good hotel, you can find in sites like http://www.accorhotels.com.br....
Danger spots in Rio ??? Unfortunatelly Rio is a beatiful city but not a safe one, the best recomendation: do what local people do...its nice to know Rio but:
if you are looking for beatiful beaches its better to go to Ilhabela (its a island in Sao Paulo state coast)
if you are looking for bush or nature its better to go to chapada diamantina (bahia state) or chapada dos guimaraes (goias state)
Good trip!!!!

Hi girls,
Once I posted some advices for tourists in Rio:
http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=6624

Try to stay in Barra neghborhood... this way u avoid the crowds and dangers of the south zone (copacabana, for ex) But Leblon, Ipanema and Lagoa are always fascinating!

Don't:
- Walk late at night on your own
- Never, Never express any reaction if you are being robbed. Try to take it easy...
- Avoid taking taxis or driving on freeways thru the so called 'favelas'.
- Make some trusting friends that live in rio.
- As Rod said, there are lots of fascinating places apart from rio...
Suggestions: Ilha Grande (fascinating boat trips and beaches - 3hrs from rio) Buzios (exciting nightlife - 2 hrs from rio), etcetcetc

all d best! Enjoy one of the most beatiful cities in the world!

The previous posts are indeed sensible ones, but can I post my own cautionary post?

Don't be scared.

I am blonde, travelled in Brazil for three and a bit months on my own as a 20 year old female, three weeks roughly of which I spent in Beautiful Rio and loved every minute.

The point I would like to make is if you are sensible and streetwise and don't flash your valuables, this includes yourselves!!, then you will be fine. I know I was.

Don't miss out on Rio cos you're worried, lets face it you can get mugged, robbed, raped any where in the world. Doesn't stop you from walking out the front door in the morning though does it??

this is good advice particularly.

I would just add, try not to take out more cash than you need so if you do by any chance at all get robbed you don't lose much.

Barra is a good district to stay in albeit a little quiet and less of a party atmosphere. The HI there is sweet and very safe.

Good luck girls you're gonna have a fabulous time if my trip is anything to go by :)
