I can't speak for the UK and their reasoning behind the Christmas lights issue - but I can speak to it from the views in the US. Every year we have lawsuits - most of them nuisance suits - because of the separation of church and state. Christmas is not celebrated by many different religious groups, agnostics and atheists. Their view is one of not wishing to be "bombarded" with religious symbols during a Christian holiday, one they do not embrace. These groups can not take on a private company for displaying lights, nativity scenes, or other "symbols - but they regularly file suits against local governments to ban displays in public parks, government office buildings, public schools, etc.

With that said, I am just guessing that the UK is beginning to experience the same type of situation. Either someone or some group finds the use of the word Chrismas offensive - or someone or group has decided to avoid any type of discourse and trying to nip in the bud before it happens. Either way - it's is a nuisance case. (But, that is just my opinion.)

Personally, I'm just becoming very tired of people thinking they need to be catered to over and over. I am not a religious person but I don't care if they are Christmas lights or holiday lights or just lights. There are more important things in this world to worry about than a few items that are only displayed for a months. Get a life!

I'm not sure it would have made it outside the States yet (not sure how International television programming works to be honest) but did anybody catch the new episode of the Family Guy last night? It was basically an ode to political incorrectness and a middle finger to the FCC.

Say what you want about FOX programming, but that show is frigg'in brilliance if you ask me.

I think I can clarify the C...S lights story. Some Councils in Britain decided to rename their C...S Lights to 'Winter Lights'. This was because it wanted to put up the lights early to celebrate Diwali and Eid. They decided that they wouldn't display lights or decorations showing only Christian religious figures such as Jesus or angels, but instead would stick to a 'winter theme' of stars, snowflakes etc.

I think they wanted to be all inclusive with their lights in reflection that no everyone in Britain celebrates Christmas! I've been trying to find the news story to link to, but I can't find it sorry!

Start one!! (But I suggest starting it in Off Topic.) ;)

Donna - that is a better explanation than what I was expecting. I was hoping the answer wasn't going to be the same rhetoric we hear over here across the pond. Maybe the lights should be left up all year and just called "Pretty Lights". (No, I'm not being sarcastic - I like the idea - just can't think of an appropriate name at the moment.)

I agree lights should be left up all year round, especially the little fairy lights...it looks really nice in cities in Europe where the trees are sparkling with lights, even during the summer!

Princessb - I don't think they were trying the say the C..S lights were offensive, just that they wanted to include Diwali and Eid in the celebrations. The non-Christians I know are certainly not offended by the lights, but it's nice that we can celebrate Diwali as well, what with it being the celebration of light and good over evil!
