i am arriving in Irkuts at 02.15 AM with -30 and can not find any places to book a bed!!!! Am emailing loads of places to ask if they can book me a bed and keep awake to let me in but nobody id emailing back. Am getting a bit nervous now and hope i do not have to freeze to death in a trainstation in siberia (would make the paper at home i guess). Can some body give me some tips (on where and how to book that is. I know the termal underwear bit, cheers)
I can`t offer accom help, but i can say that the station (like all large ones in Russia) is open 24hrs - partly because of MT - and is relatively warm, and you can stay there until the next morning. Quite a few travellers tend to sleep there before early trains, or afte arriving at funny times (we got in a 3am local, and stayed there until 8).
I`ve only been to Irkutsk in summer, but i have slept in Novossibirsk, Sverdlovsk and Niz Nov stations in winter without any great problems with the cold or blizzards.
cheers but had tip of hostel and they REPLIED!!!
down town irkutsk and they pick me up as well!!!!!!
yippie yippie i send you a personal email to
Is it really -30 there? I was just there a week ago and it was beautiful - sunny and highs around 10 - 15 degrees.
At the moment it wont be, but winter comes in somewhat on the quick side, and it can get to a good chunk lower than that... Having said that, Siberia isn`t always anywhere near as cold as many people make out (it is, but not for so long), especially along the Trans Sib which is on the southern edge anyway
