Hi all... I and my two friends will be in Bangkok from Feb 4th 06 and need to be in Singapore for our flight to Sydney on the 27th Feb.
We are def up for the Full Moon - which I believe is scheduled for the 14th Feb and so need some advice on the best way to get from Bangkok to Koh Pha-Ngan in the 10 days- bearing in mind we'd like to see as much as possible up North, before we make our way southwards.
Any advice on getting to Koh Pha-Ngan would be much appreciated, as well as any advice on time to spend in KL - Malaysia and Singapore...
I am guessing the overnight trains are a great way to travel around??!!
Would love to hear your thoughts... Being first time travellers we need as much advice on routes and money saving tips as possible!!
This might not help but I will soon be doing a similar trip around that area and someone advised me to look at (www.airasia.com) for discount flights. I personally couldn't believe how cheap some of these flights were to travel to and from places. Hope this might help you!
Also Tiger Airways...very cheap!
if you happen to be in malaysia (either penang, better still in Kuala Lumpur) on Feb 11 2006, you will catch the Hindu Thaipusam festival....very colourful..at the batu caves...a must for foreigners.
but then...ur itinerary may not fit in...anyway, if you are going down from BKK, take the train/ or bus ( from the southern terminal) for suratani, and if u are late, u can stay at one of the many guesthouses or cheap hotels (muang tai hotel/tapee hotel), and from here you can either take ferry to phanga/samui, or take bus to samui, and from here, hop into a ferry to phanga...
u can start u journey down south, on Feb 10,11 or 12...giving you one clear day to get to surat...my advice, full moon parties are always packed...so good idea to book a place in phanga in advance..
maybe on 17th feb (giving u some time to see around samui/phanga), you can bus down to hatyai from samui via surat, and from here switch bus to KL (in hatyai, davis tours are good...RM40 a seat & comfy...seri maju)..maybe a two days in KL, then head for malacca (by bus)if u are looking for something different (try samudera inn at malacca raya...run by former teacher and popular among europeans), and mayhbe two days after which u can either head for the beaches off mersing, or down south to JB, and from exit to singapore. BUS ALL THE WAY...cheap and reliable
It sounds like time is not that critical, so I would take the bus or train down to Surat Thani. The train is more comfortable if you get a sleeper, but is more expensive than the bus. There are two choices on buses; Gov't buses leave from Sai Tai Mai(Southern)bus station. There are fan, a/c and 1st class buses. This would be my choice; a/c or 1st class bus leaving in the evening; arriving at Surat Thani in the early AM. Then the shuttle bus to the pier for the ferry to Samui. The other option is the tourist bus from the Khao San Road area of BKK. It is the cheapest way to get there. Buy a bus/ferry ticket from one of the many travel agents and take the overnight bus. Be advised that there have been many reports of theft on these buses. Guard your money, passport, camera closely. Google 'koh samui' and read up on the wealth of info available. Have a great time.
