Me and my girlfriend are landing in New york as part of our travelling. We will be there for 3 weeks and in this time we hope to spend 5 days in new york then travel up to montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. We are budgeting so wanted to know the cheapest way of travel. Pls could someone also advise us to whether this is a very long distance to travel and if we are being to ambitious. We have heard about the greyhound bus but also wanted to know prices of transport!
Thankyou and would be much appreciated if anyone could get back to us!:)

Matt

Well, it's about 630 kilometres (380 miles) from New York to either Montreal or Toronto--and there are great highways that you can take to either location. I imagine that the Greyhound bus is probably the cheapest way to get there, but you should also be able to go there either by train or plane. Out of curiosity I looked up one way plane fares in mid-January and found that you could go one-way from NYC to Montreal for $131 each ($262 for you and your girlfriend) on either Air Canada or American Airlines. $262 US Dollars works out to about 222 euros or 150 Great Britain pounds.

Enjoy.

Just checked out train prices--and it runs $120 for two people one way from NYC to Montreal--or about half the plane fares. Check out the www.amtrack.com website to purchase your tickets and check out dates. Canada has its own train schedules for travel from Montreal to other cities within the country (including Toronto).

Enjoy

Checked out the website for the bus trip at http://www.trailwaysny.com

Turns out the fee is $75 each ($150 for the two of you one-way), but drops down to $118 if you go round-trip to Montreal (meaning you save $4 over the train price for two people). I suggest you take the take the train to/from Montreal. Maybe take the bus from there to Toronto.

Enjoy.

For Canadian distances, you're looking at 5 hours between TO and Ottawa and 2 hours between Ottawa and Montreal. So it's a bit of a ways. Book early with VIA or they'll bugger you over.
