Depends on the type of music, but here's a few suggestions:

Rhythm and Blues--Detroit (Motown)
Eminem (rap) is also from there

Country Music--Nashville, Tennessee is the place--although a few country stars started and still live in Texas (e.g. Hank Williams, Jr is my personal country favorite and Willie Nelson is from Texas also)

Jazz--New Orleans, Lousiana or Memphis, Tennessee (Elvis Presley also lived in Memphis). Also has some roots in Chicago, Illinois

Grunge sound started in Seattle (Nirvana). I think Creed is from there too.

San Francisco started the psychedelic sound in the 1960s and still has a lot of top artists who came from here or who still live here--Smashmouth, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, and Green Day, for example.

For a smaller town, consider Athens, Georgia--both REM and B-52s started there. Also from the south is Lynard Skynard.

Southern California probably has the most artists. Most famous are probably The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Beach Boys--and, of course, Michael Jackson has lived here for over 30 years.

Boston is famous for Aerosmith, Bad Company, and the group called "Boston".

Tom Petty started in Gainesville, Florida

And, of course, New York City has lots of people who started there--Billy Joel and Madonna come to mind the quickest.

Elton John lives in Atlanta, Georgia--though he is originally from England and still has a home there as well.

These are the ones that come quickly to mind.

Id go with Nashville and Austin if you want to be able to eat. LA, NY and some other big towns are good too, but $$$$$

the kind of music i play is drop-dead beautiful, uplifting, ambient, soaring music. if ya know these bands> sigur ros, explosions in the sky, appleseed cast.
i'ts all instrumental and relatively unpopular. it's like alternative meets classical music.
yeah, money is an issue. this is what i CANNOT DECIDE FOR THE LIFE OF ME...
do i want a cheap, more quiet place like Kansas or Nebraska where i can be at peace and write my music, do tons of creative things, and go to school?
do i want a hussle and bussle, lively place like New York or Chicago or Seattle... where i can write my music, do tons of creative things, and go to school?

I've lived in San Francisco before. I loved it so much, have considered going back. But i want to try another city, that's what keeps me from going back.... should I?

i need a home,

Personally I would say New York, maybe I have a special affinity with the place and Im biased...but Im also in the creative industry and I can honastly say New York gave me the most amazing opportunities of my life!!!Yeah its expensive, but mayeb look into living somewhere cheaper like Brooklyn.....theres a lot of people out there just waiting to find talent and its an incredible place for networking!I have a few friends over there who have bands and they have had some great chances in New York!Plus its an amazing city and its so diverse so you would find a captive audience for your work and Ive always felt so inspired when in New York!

I'd go for Manchester, England, too. That city spawned loads of bands; New Order, Stone Roses, Oasis, Oceansize, to name a few. Otherwise, how about El Paso, Texas? At The Drive-In originated from this town.
