I was just wondering if anybody was planning on visiting Machu Picchu for New Years Eve/Day.?.
I am landing in La Paz (Bolivia) on Christmas Day and wanted to head up to Peru for New Years Eve... I am going to be spending 3 weeks in Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela doing pre-dissertation work (actually doing pre-senior thesis work!). My research is focused on studying Public/Collective Management Systems of Water Resources (as opposed to the Privatization model) in South America.
In any case, I wanted to be in Peru for New Years and wanted to know if anyone wanted to hook up for the trip...
If you are flying directly into La Paz from a lowland city (e.g. Lima), you should be aware that this is the highest capital city in the world and breathing is NOT easy.
I flew into La Paz from Arica (Chilean Pacific coast) in March this year and one lady on the plane was in a wheelchair sucking oxygen within minutes.
I had taken anti-altitude pills the day before, thank God, but I was walking VERY VERY slowly for the next 3 days.
Most doctors advise acclimatising by travelling to La Paz by road and stopping at a lower (e.g. 2,500 metres) altitude for a day or two before getting to 3,660 metres.
I had planned in staying at least one night in Putre on the bus climb to La Paz but the strikers/demonstrators had closed the Chilean/Bolivian border so I had to fly.
Be aware of the dangers of high altitude.
P.S. La Paz, Cuzco and Machu Picchu are fantastic!!!
Hey thanks for the heads up...
I am wondering if I can talk to my travel agent to maybe find a new city to fly into (to assist the acclimation process!)...
Hmm, maybe I should just go right into Lima...
Hey Travis, me and a friend are going to be in peru for new years also. We are two guys from syracuse NY. We are flying into Lima dec 30 and will be in that area for new years eve. I'm not sure what your looking to do on new years eve, but I'm sure there will be some great partys going on somewhere in lima. Also there is suposively this great little party city just south of lima called kilometer 97. Not sure if it'll be open yet since its closed up until jan from what i hear, but if it is that may be a great option.
Anyways, someone else may know more, but if you end up changing your flights to go into lima we'd be mre than happy to meet up with you.
Feel free to send me an email. -snip-
