This thread is marked as being about Greece

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me where Hellinikon is? Can't seem to find it on any maps! Thanks.

Hi Tam,

I suppose you're talking about Athens International Airport? If so, here's the link for the homepage: Hope you find the information you need. I've heard that it's still a bit chaotic getting into Athens from the airport.

If you need more info on Athens, let me know, I have a few links that might be useful for you.

Hellinikon is certainly an airport, but i thought (not being someone who flys, i can't be certain) that it was superceeded a couple of years ago by a new Int'l airport (to the SE?) which handles most flights now. Hellinikon itself is in the South of the city and i believe is going to be where some of the indoor events take place in the Olympics.

Hi All,

Thanks. I too heard that it was the old airport. It's definitely where the Olympic events are, cause I'll be working there. Thought it was kinda important to know to source close-by places etc!:)

Hi again Tam, I didn't think the old airport was still in use, so I assumed that the Hellinikon would be the new airport. It's a bit confusing, because both the old and the new airport is called Athens International Airport!!

Well, I've found a homepage with links to all the Greek airports, also for the old Athens airport, which I've tried once (and believe me it is VERY old, especially compared to Copenhagen, where I come from ;)).

Unfortunately it doesn't give you a lot of info. If you want me to, I'll dig up an old LP guide for Greece, so I could give you more exact info on the old airport. Just let me know!!

Cheers Sole

Hi there,

Very confusing I know!

Now, now Sole- don't be making excuses cause you're from Copenhagen!

Will look up that link right now. Re: Hellinikon, I'm not overly concerned about the airport itself- just about where it is in relation to transport and getting to Central Athens.

Thanks for your help,

hi again Tam,

Excuses No way, explanations, cause Copenhagen is such a brilliant airport

Well, I thought there might be some info as to the location of the airport and how to get to and from the airport, but if you don't find what you need in that link, let me know, and as I told you I'll dig out my old LP for Greece, I'm certain they have some info on the exact whereabouts of the airport. We went directly from the airport to Piraeus, and later from Athens to the airport by bus, wasn't expensive and not a very long trip.

None of the links I have mention anything about the old airport, as if it's totally non-existent!!!

If you could please dig up the LP guide, I'd really appreciate it. I'm sure that despite the fact that you are from Copenhagen, you're more than competent. ;-)

How was the bus trip? and how long does it take to get around Central Athens?

Totally non-existant! I know, but I'm not the only one who's curious, I'm sure!

Hi again Tam,

ROFL about being from Copenhagen!!! Well, I actually didn't grow up here, have lived here since 1986 and thoroughly enjoy it

The bus trip was OK, bus was packed with people going to the airport: tourists and airport/airline employees. As far as I remember we got on the bus at Syntagma.

We didn't really do a lot of travelling in Athens, we spent one night there. We did a lot of walking, so I think a lot of the time you'll be comfortable walking.

I'll find my LP when I get home tonight, then give you all the info I have. At the same time I'll send you a few links with quite good info on Athens.

Hi Tam,

It's on the coast, Sth/SW of the city try:

Unfortunately it's not on the metro and i'm almost certain that there's no railways out that way either.

And direct jny times by bus from Hellinikon to the olympic village seem to be 29mins
