Which is a better place to visit. We have 5 days in Thailand during the last week in December. Phuket or Chiang Mai? We want to go Elephant Trekking and silk shopping. Beach destination is not required.

A no brainer; Chiang Mai. Historic city with hill tribes living not too far away versus a beach with package tourists from Europe. Go to CM and immerse yourself in another culture for a few days.

Dear,

Chiang Mai is a good place for you to see elephant shows, long neck village, orchild farm. a mountain city, fresh air...I think it's a good place if you don't need a beach destination.
Enjoys,
Duc

I'd go for chiangmai...so much to see, and u can spread out...unlike phuket which tends to be overcrowded around this time !...

so much to see...the colorful cultures of the hilltribes of northern Thailand -Akha, the Hmong, the Lahu, the Lisu, the Karen and the Yao.

or nature experience and whitewater rafting on Mae Tang river...and if u want to pick up some fine traditional thai cooking tips, get to the lanna farm....for outdoor cooking classes!

have fun.

dana..

Hi

I went to Phuket and there wasnt that much to see. It wasnt even that much of a pretty place. Never had time to go c chang mai but wish I had as heard it was beautiful. Chang mai is also well known for elephant rides. I would go for Chang mai!

I have been living in Chiang mai now for over 15 years and love it. We enjoy traveling to Phuket for snorkeling and deep sea fishing but that gets old after a few days. Chiang Mai always has thinks to do. I have taken some short streaming videos of interesting places and things to do with my wife and friends. There are no ads or pop ups just our home videos. We hope you enjoy them as much as we had taking them.

Enjoy,
Randy and Ning

Here is a short Video of some of the things to see at Doi Inthanon National Park. including a Karen Hill Tribe village and beautiful waterfalls.

Video of the summit of Doi Inthanon, the highest spot in Thailand plus the Green tailed Sunbird, which is found no other place in the World and a hike through real rain forest.

Everyone who comes to Chiang Mai visits Wat Prathat Doi Suthep temple located on top of the mountain overlooking the city. Join us for a video tour.

Here is a short 5 minute video of our favorite elephant camp with friends.

Take a Video Tour with my wife Ning and I as we shop at our local Monday market near our home in Chiang Mai

If you enjoy shopping for Fabrics, Clothes, Herbs and Spices and hard to find items you should take a look at this Video of the area around Warorot Market in Chiang Mai. It also includes the beautiful flower market and out of this world fireworks stand.

This is my favorite. Here in North Thailand the Loi Krathong Festival is much different than anywhere in the Kingdom. In the small town of Mae Jo north of Chiang Mai they start the festival on Saturday night by launching hot air balloons called "Khom Loy". I went with my wife and friends and took this short video. We are not talking about a few Khom Loy but thousands upon thousands all at the same time. You got to see this.

Chaing Mai definetly! Take a trek-really cool if you dont mind roughing it a bit. I did a cookery course which was really fun. Also has an awesome market and you have to hit the kalari food court. Absolutely the best allround food experience i have ever had. Eat so well for so little with options from all over the world-its great! Also hit the temple on the top of the hill-cant remember the name but is really quite spectacular in all gold. Views supposed to be amazing too but we were stuck in low cloud so never got to see it unfortunately! Hope that helps C

Hello allthai! I must say, having been there and trying to explain to people what is like is difficult but you have posted truly helpful information other members can use to get an idea of what to expect, not to mention the videos are great. Great post!
