Keeping Backpack Safe In Hostels

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Keeping Backpack Safe In Hostels

Hi, just wondering about this as my friend who I am going to Oz with is planning on buying a £45 wire mesh security thing that covers your backbpack protecting it from theives if sharing a room in a hostel for example. My brothers gf who travelled for a year however said she had no problems and did not have one of these as everyone is in the same boat so wouldnt be stealing another persons property. She did suggest taking a bike chain to chain the bag at least to your bed for when you go out. I just think £45 is another big lump of money to add to the already expensive trip, but then like my travel bud said, she'd rather be safe than sorry. Just wondering if anyones had any bad experiences in hostels with anything beign stolen, or even anyone else who hasnt left yet in my position if you had thought about it and what you were going to do with your things - even money while you sleep ??
Cheers, Em

Quoting Emily_Oz

I agree with her (after travelling down under for two years myself.)
The only thing I had were two little combination locks that closed the zippers so that no one could go through the bag while I wasn't there, but otherwise I really wouldn't worry. No one is going to steal a 20kg backpack with dirty laundry. :)

Of course, I guess it also depends on the type of hostels you go to (what other people would be there), and on not blatantly showing that you have an expensive digital camera or wallet filled with money in the pack. (For those, hostels in oz (at least, most of the ones I stayed in) provide small in-room lockers.)

Well Emily

As ozintro said

travel insurance. and common sense.
that's all you need.

What i would say is

1. Scan a copy of all your travel Doc's passport , Tickets etc and save online some where . Just incase

2. Get your self a bank account and don't have load of cash on you .

3. Most hostels have safes so if your going out don't leave your stuff in the room put it in the safe . I know everyone is in the same boat but i know from exprince you get the odd one .

Don't let this worry you Oz is a great place and you have loads of fun

-snip-

Hope this helps

[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please. ]

when i was in paris someone stole the backpack of a guy we were hanging out with... just walked out of the hostel with it.
it was such a hassle because the guy had no stuff afterwards and the backpack was filled with things he had bought for people.

and on the same day someone stole money and passports from the hostel's safe.
he only found out as he was leaving to go to the airport so he was in a bad situation.

moral of that story is dont stay at the three ducks hostel in paris!
(we left the next morning)

that is the only time i have ever heard of anything bad happening.
it has made me slightly more wary -
i would also suggest a bike chain and locks for your backpack but think wire mesh is probably extreme....
