Brayden15 has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hey all,

21 year old from Canada here. I'll be heading down to Australia alone in March 2006 on a 1 year WHV...and I'll be looking for work right away. I'm just a bit stressed on the thought of me not finding a job, I'm not picky, and I'll take anything pretty much as long as I have a flow of income before I start backpacking. How hard is it to find work?

If anyone has worked down there, or is in the same boat as me, drop me a line! Thanks...

- Brayden

if you're not picky then you'll find work.

there's lots of fruit picking work up the east coast. or labouring jobs in darwin.

i'd recommend contacting a few companies that specialise in finding jobs for travellers before you leave.

Hi Brayden,
Check this website out.
They also produce a book that follows the seasonal work around OZ. It may be practical to get a copy before coming over so you can your route.
March is a good time to start weather wise. Once you hit the East coast, look for work and progressively make your way North, then West, South then East. See if that fits in with the areas you want to visit. Of interest too, if you do go down the West Coast of Oz, there are fruit plantations in the Kimberley area (NW) and further South in Carnarvon. Be aware though that Australia is a vast country - about the size of the US but with 10% of their population and most of that is on the Coast. So there are big spaces between civilisation but there are always fellow travellers to hook up with, especially if you are following the work trail. In any event, relax and enjoy your stay with us.

Hi Brayden,

ok if you want a job straight away i would reccommend Melbounre or Sydney there are companies there orientated towards backpackers. There's hundreds of jobs in these major cites. I would also reccommend buying a mobile phone as soon as you get there unlike canada pay as u go service there is widely available and used. Also take a copy on floppy disc of your current CV which will save hassle in internet cafes and money!!!

Brayden wish u all the best on your travels and you're in for a whirl wind ride. All i remember from the Canadians in Australia is 4/20 day so rock on.

I live in Adelaide and from my personal experiences in getting work you shouldnt have too much of a problem. If you have any experience in Bar work or really any work experience at all then your prospects will be better.
In Adelaide there isnt a lot of work advertised. Most people tend to get things through word of mouth, or by applying at whatever places they hope to get into. Lots of vineyards always need workers, and worst case scenario you can always get factory work pretty quickly.
Im only speaking for South Australia though, the rest might be different.
I think that your best bet would be to do a bar course or work in a bar back home, then come over here and use that. Bars are ALWAYS looking for new people, and international people are always more interesting and bring in a crowd so that's the go!!!

Hope that helps!
