mle has indicated that this thread is about USA

sooo i'm planning a trip from LA to San Francisco and back along highway 1 in december. I'll be there over Christmas and if we manage to follow my "schedual" we're going to be in big sur on chrismas eve. I really love rugged scenery and want to be as close to the ocean as possible. if anyone has any suggestions about where i should be staying and what i should be looking out for it would be much appreciated!!

You'll want to stay in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. There's also a Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, so don't get the two confused. The first one has campsites on the beach, the second has campsites only along the Big Sur River. Here's the website you'll need to get info and to book a reservation.

Enjoy.

Also, forgot to mention that you should also consider camping in Big Basin State Park near the beach as well when you are out this way. (it's not in Big Sur, though--it's about 20 miles north of Santa Cruz).

It's the oldest state park in the country and has some absolutely stunning redwoods. It can also be accessed through the http:www.parks.ca.gov
website.

Enjoy

Check out Ventana Wilderness which is located within Big Sur. Lots of hiking trails. Here's some info on Ventana: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/publishers/westcliffe/ca_venta.htm

If you do go to Ventana during this time of year, it would be good to check out: http://www.ventanawild.org/trails/trail.html because weather can be unpredictable in NorCal during the winter.

Also, as Calcruzer mentioned, Big Basin is another great state park. Lots of giant redwoods!
