Guess it's North Korea for me. Spent 3 weeks there and didn't have to pay for any food and accommodation expenses; only our own shopping.

Not exactly obscure, but not really open to backpackers either: Kiev in the Ukraine.

If you ever tried to find a decent guidebook or online information that didn't cater to business travellers or high end package deal tourists about that place, you'll know what I mean.

Andorra
Not odd, not obscure, maybe one of the most frequent vacation trips in Europe, but here in home... Andorra? How you eat that?

Catu XD

for me, its not a country... but... probably maine. some areas are lively, but some of the areas i rode my bike through were absolutley desolate. for two hours i was on a road (us 1) with nothing but woods and a house every couple of miles. it was west of ellsworth. i actually was going the wrong direction and released a loud explative when i found out i had to ride two hours back in the pitch black, couldnt even see the road. scariest shit ever.

Have any of you ever heard of Sealand just off the East coast of the UK?
A friend told me about it the other day and I must say that it would probably be the oddest passport stamp to have in the world.

Check it out on this

Its not a joke! This independent state really does exist. Its on my list of places to go before I die!

Yup, I know of it, although it's officiall status is still suitably vague and oddball. But agree it would be interesting to visit.

As for me, i've been to quite a few relatively untouristed places, many ex Soviet, although no really obscure ones - Albania, Moldova (And Trans-Dinestr), Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan, Krygystan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, for example. I've also spend a chunk of time in Northern Russia, where tourism is nil. Even the Russians won't go there. Less oddball, i've been to Nordkapp (the most Northerly point in mainland Europe) and also lived in Liechtenstein, which especially to non Europeans is somewhere which normally draws big blank looks when I mention it...

Koh Muk - an island off the western coast of Thailand. You get there by being dumped off the ferry taking passengers off to posher islands. You will get dumped 100 feet from the beach, so you have to walk with your rucksack on your head Its a lovely fisher man / rubber estate community, with a beach on both sides. No electricity, one shop and a local restaurant. Beautiful place, and we spent many evenings watching the children swim around their father's boats while the sun set, and trekking through the rubber estate with a torchlight to get back to our digs. Very cool!
