I can't give you too much advice as this is my first time too.:)

However, if you're planning to go to OZ after January next year, drop me a line as I'll be finished on the job I've got lined up and I'll be planning a traveling trip (don't know where yet). If you fancy joining me, you'll be very welcome.

If you decide to go out before then, you could always drop in to Holbrook and say hello.

It is possible to stop over in hongkong! - I've done it with CathayPacific and Qantas (and British Airways) do...there must be others as well - shop around to get the best price.
You will need to get a visa of some sort....I'm assuming that you want to work a bit so see this page to get you started on how to apply:

Have a look at other posts which have asked about good things to see and do. Weather is a tricky one - it is a big country after all! If you are in the northern parts of NT, WA and QLD then summer (Dec-Feb) is going to be pretty hot - temps around 39-38 celcius are common. Summer is milder the further south you get - will be a very comfy summer in Melb/Hobard/Adelaide/Syd etc. Spring (Sept-Nov) is a great time to go and in Winter you will be able to ski in some parts of Vic/NSW/Tas....just depends if you are into that. Parts of NT have very warm temps in the day through winter but at night drop to near zero. anyway, see the governments page for the latest on weather in oz

hope this has been helpful!

When you search for flights you will have the option of direct or non-direct-you will obviously go non-direct and you can then stop off! ood luck-Oz is great-there's so much to do!
