hi im 26 and after a lot of thought i am planning to travel to Oz. I was originally going for a 3 week holiday if Feb to Melbourne to visit my cousin but ive decided to go for a year & see some sights.
So im going to start in Melbourne & stay there till about June then head for cairns travelling the coast.
I will have about £2000 in my pocket (not litterally in my pocket)but i WANT to work & meet new people and see how the ozzies live.
i love to party & that combined with meeting new people & seeing new sights is my reason for leaving a stable job and secure home haha.
am i making a good start in melbourne? or should i go to cairns fairst and travel down the coast?
im worried about my visa, i do have a conviction form 5 nearly six years ago & i dont know if this will hamper my chances of a visa? i never went to prison but it was on my record & im worried that this will damage my chances?
i am applying for my visa online this weekend, booking flights next week & then leaving around 25th february from manchester.
any help advice etc would be greatly recieved..
ps; hopefully because i said i have a conviction people dont think im a murdere or anything like that haha.. it was basically becaus i had trouble in a nightclub once when i was 21. the 1st and only time ive ever been in trouble in my life as its not in my nature. thats why i mentioned it !
I shouldn't think you'd have a problem, as long as you explain everything. Australia is a tolerant society, and you're hardly public enemy no.1.
Now if you were talking of America it might be different...!
Melbourne is probably a good place to start in Feb, as it will summer, and it gets (relatively) cold down there by June, so heading up to Cairns is the right idea...if you like the heat.
Yeah - good plan. Weatherwise you're best to start in the South (Melbourne/Victoria) in summer and head North (Qld/Cairns) for the winter - where it'll be just like summer. Be ready for a shock when you get off the plane -- Manchester -1C, Melbourne 30C.
we applied for our visas online a week or so ago. we got them both within an hour. how's that for service?!
christ.. im wetting myself at the thought haha (not litterally)
If you're coming from Manchester, then going to Melbourne in the summer and up north to Cairns in the winter will give you less of a shock with the weather.
Melbourne has a lot of summer festivities and good shopping.
Cairns - you can probably do more things in winter than in summer because the humidity in summer can be a real shocker.
Sounds like you have the right idea, I've also been told to start in the south in the summer (i.e Dec-Feb) then make your way up the the north part of the country during the winter, although I've heard its still pretty sunny and nice in cairns during the winter. I hope thats right as I hate the cold. I'll be starting in Sydney myelf and hope to be up to cairns by May time.
U should be right winter here isn't a real season unless you go somewhere down south. I flew out of brissy winter july right into london summer and temp wise it was comparable but u get alot more rain lol
I was going to agree with everyone on the whole start in Melbourne thing but then i thought, if you want to party a bit go to cairns first as a lot of people go to northern Aus during summer, it could be a bit more peaceful in winter altough still quite warm. also Melbourne is not bad in winter, I went last year in june and it was a good party. If your from UK you should be use to the cold, around 10 celcius in day at worst.
Places to go:
Definately go to Byron Bay (North NSW near border of queensland). I've been twice and it is awsome. its the kind of place you'd expect to find jack johnson. in fact chris martin from cold play goes there a lot. At Easter there is a blues and roots fest for 3 days, major chill out and in july another festival called splendor, both see around 50000 people come to town....Also probably the best local people in Aus if you want to meet people.
Gold coast. Party capital of AUS.
I heard a lot of backpakers like Perth. i've never been but ask around.
Hope i helped.
