This is a kind of philosophical or spiritual question I guess. Posting a reply to mANDm's nice thread made me wonder.

Is it possible that having met someone, romantically or just as good friends, same sex or opposite, if we "lose" contact in the conventional sense, can we still maintain the connection simply by remembering them? I know we all remember people and things... but can that memory have a deeper function that we are perhaps not usually conscious of? Especially when we "actively" recall them to mind rather than say, being passively reminded of them by some event. As I write this my thoughts turn to Entanglement, Gaia, Buddha Nature, Unified field theory, all kind of swirling around in front of my mind's eye offering an answer I can't quite pull from the scene.

I'd be keen to know what anyone thinks... ( I could be just nuts of course)

I don't think so. After all, if that worked, the girl that spent two years haunting my thoughts after she dumped me BY CELL PHONE would have certainly called me at some point. All that thinking about her did is make sure I spent two years being miserable and not getting over the broken relationship.

No. A very emphatic NO.

I ought to know. It blew up in my face.

Yes, you could be nuts. But it's an interesting concept.

No-one seems to be contacting me though.

Hang on a minute....I can hear something....

They are with us when ever we think of them....but do they know? Not unless we physically call them ;)

Aawww, sorry Greg and Summer..... that's kind of my experience too. Before cell phones came along I got dumped by fax once! But it's not my experience in EVERY case. Sometimes its nice.

If some kind of contact IS maintained though, even if only in our own mind, it must get awful tiring carrying or dragging those horrible people around ?

Good question, Cup cake... That's what I would like to know. We could all really stuff the cell phone companies if we could "know" and reply without them!

But I suppose its just wishful thinking...

Oh, sorry James that was me trying to reach my Dad.... same name, sorry!

There! You see... there IS some contact. Cup cake proves the point... Now, if we can just figure out how to deal with the inteference thing we'll be on a winner!

I agree with Cupcake... With the little detail that I don't like talking at the phone (on the phone? in the phone? with the phone?), but I write a lot... And I've realized that my closer friends (they all live abroad), even if we don't have a "live" relationship, when we do see each other time disappears and it seems we haven't been apart for long!!

I think we always stay in contact, its true what Cup cake says, we dont actaully know if they are in 'contact' with us aswell. in my experience most of the time not... I went to primary school with this one boy and then moved away & never stayed in contact or anything and then BAM... 8 years later i meet him in Milan...does he remember me...NO! he was still crystal clear in my mind even though we were never actaully very good friends.
I suppose it varies with people, I tend to remember nearly everyone i meet and they sometimes randomnly come up in my thoughts probably because they were connected to something i was thinking about, maybe that means that I think too much?
