Ok so i have been searching on the net for ages now and am not getting anymore info, i'm starting to get a headache!

I have found out that I can get either a VIP backpacker card, Nomads, YHA or an IYTC card. I have kind of come to the conclusion that i will prob go for the VIP one-it looks like you get a lot more.

The question is...where can i find out where i can use this card-i mean with what companies, hostels etc???

I have emailed them directly but i am just impatient!

I am going to Oz btw-has anyone travelled Oz and bought oe of these cards?

Thanks guys

Jas x

I've traveled with the YHA card (both Oz and New Zealand). You can find a list of their discounts here. VIP should basically be an exact mirror image of that, but with slightly different companies - if it seems they give more, I'd only ascribe that to better marketing (and on not making the actual information readily available).
In the real world of backpacking I never really cared all that much about the discounts though - in the end you'll do what you want to do after all, and $5 off here or there is nice, but the discounts are never large enough to really make a difference. (Except on transport, which is identical for all cards (you just need to be able to show a backpacker card), and on hostels, where YHA gives you $3.50 a night and VIP only $1 or $2 (but the price after discount is similar, so that doesn't matter much either, just as long as you have the card of your preferred network, where YHA offers more reliable quality and a more quiet crowd, while VIP is more party-oriented, and has a better chance of places with more atmosphere (though there's always exceptions to both. (And wow, look at all the parentheses. :)))))

Oh, and when you get either card, it'll come with an information package containing a booklet detailing all discounts and all hostels that it's valid for.

LOL-but so you should be though! I thought a few of mine were good but boy!!

So i got an email back from VIP people and they obviously said what you did about when you purchase it you will recieve the booklet etc. but i'm thinking surely you would want to know before-no???

I mean i wanted to look into which hostels/companies you can get discounts on with which card so i can compare-there are certain hostels that i will be staying at again and i'll prob be using Oz ex. again!

Am i just being silly and is it not that bigger deal-i just thought i might as well get discounts if i can, i feel i am missing something here-besides a brain that is!

They also give away the information booklets at backpackers expos, but it'd have to be really good timing for that to be of any use.

Chances are that any VIP Hostels would be willing to hand you the booklet with discounts if you ask and say that you're trying to make up your mind on if you want to buy the card. (I assume at least that all VIP hostels will sell the VIP membership.) Not much use for research in advance though.

As for hostels, you can drill down from this page to find out which hostels are VIP hostels (they have "over 125", versus "over 140" for YHA).
But yeah, they definitely don't make it easy.
