Hi there, I was in Hanoi in September for 4 days. Stayed at the Zephyr Hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake. It's a ten minute saunter to the Old Quarter. But it's slightly pricey, at about US$70 for a double room.

If you don't mind slumming it a bit, I would suggest you picked a hotel in the US$30-45 range. Most of these are right in the centre of the Old Quarter, where all the buzz is. The Old Quarter is a quaint district riddled with tiny winding lanes with hundreds of small shops which sell everything from shoes to clothes to toys and fake watched.

Here's the website where I got my bookings done.

Have fun and if you need any more information, write to me at -snip-.

Cheers,

A

You really don't need to worry too much about hotels in Hanoi - just like rest of VN there are heaps and all of about same price quality. No more than US$15-20 should secure an excellent room for two with ensuite, tv, etc.

You really should look to stay in the Old Quarter. It's very quaint and a good place to walk around and venture further. There are loads of travel agents there as well where you can book the (must do) trip to Halong Bay. We stayed around P Hang Bo where you can't walk 5 metres without tripping over a nice guesthouse. It's close to Hoan Kiem and there are loads of restaurants and stuff nearby.

Just remember that the North Vietnamese are definitely not as friendly as down South! We had a few incidents of places trying to rip us off with fake sales taxes and stuff. Also, the first hotel we stayed in gave the room we thought we had reserved away when we came back from Sapa. This led to a very grumpy walk around at 5 in the morning trying to find somewhere when we got off the train!

Enjoy your trip - Vietnam is excellent!

Try the ARMY hotel. About $40 per night, basic but clean and pretty good location + you get to eat breakfast in the mess hall with a load of Vietnamese officers.
