No way Us dollars is going to help you in India, atleast for train fares. Except for some big cities like New Delhi, mumbai, bangalore, chennai etc. you won't be able to book tickets by US dollars. In these cities also you can't book tickets in the city counters( which are much more convenient than the main railway stations.)

Its absolutely impossible to pay with dollars in India except for the high standard hotels. I have noticed actually that you could pay for traintickets in New-Delhi with US-dollars. But most pay with rupees backed-up by exchange certificates (which you always get after changing money in India).

totally agree, rupees is the currency and thats what all stations would prefer to take, be warned I once had to travel an hour in a rickshaw to find a bank to withdraw money because they wouldn't except anything else I had!!

BTW the trains in India are so much fun and a real adventure, just be warned to take good locks and anice big chain, because unfortunately there are a lot of thieves.

Your BEST bet would be to book online via the Indian Railways website. Tickets will be delivered to your hotel within 24 hours if you book before 5pm. You can pay by credit card and the initial registration is a breeze.

Here's the website : http://www.irctc.co.in/

Cheers,

Please don't be nervous about traintravel in India, its so easy. You can make reservations at the railwaystations. Most of the time there is a touristquota which means that the Indian government has saved a place for you in the train. Most of the time I booked my ticket one day before. Enjoy your trip to India, its amazing
