We are going to visit Hanoi, and we would like to visit Halong Bay. We only have one free day, so we were wondering if it was possible to do a day trip. We would love to see Halong Bay as it has been recommended very highly.
If anyone knows how long it takes to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay it would be greatly appreciated!!!

It is a 3 hours from Hanoi to Halong (vice versa) by the northern route via Dong Trieu ceramic village (photo stop and enjoy a tea...).
At Halong you need 4 hours to admire the Bay.
Have to prepare to high quality photo (400ISO)to take a pictures on this season as maybe sky is not clear.
Have a nice trip !

I did this last year. If you arrange your own transport i.e. dont rely on one of the mass of organised busses and tour groups you can get to Halong Bay in 2 hours. Basically you avoid all the forced stops at junk shops (services) on route.

Once there I guess you would get a reasonable boat trip for 4 hours, although to experiance Halong Bay properly you should do an over night trip and stay on board the boat - its great!

Dont expect to have the bay to yourself though, at times you feel part of an armada.
