Travel Forums General Talk Langkawi - Thailand...

Hi, my boyfriend and I are currently travelling South East Asia and are at the moment in Langkawi looking for a possibly yacht ride up to Thailand. We are keen to volunteer in any way and are very eager to learn how to sail.

I myself, am starting a writing degree when I return home to Scotland, and so am writing along the way, recording my travels (as most backpackers do). I am however very interested in writing a wee bit about the 'yachting culture' and it's differences and possible similarities to backpacking - independant travel, yet in a high class way. As I have never travelled on a yacht before it all seems very exciting and new to me and something which I think attracts a certain crowd of people. These are only guesses and I am eager to find out more. It will a completely different experience compared to roughing it in India for the past month and a half!

So if anyone knows of a yacht who would be interested in taking on a couple of adventurous, wide eyed and eager travellers, I would greatly appreciate it if you could get in touch.

Cheers and enjoy your travels
Emily

And as a fellow backpacker once said -

'if you are to regret anything, only regret the things you've done, not the things you haven't'

Hi emily,

let me give u the benefit of sailing experience from langkawi to phuket...

u may be lucky to "hitch"a ride in one of the sail boat headed for the king's cup in phuket from dec 3-10...these sail boats leave the royal langkawi yacht club marina..at least five days before the event...this year all teams stay at kata beach resort.
so what u can do is, since u are in langkawi, hop over to Charlie"s Pub (open to public )at the langkawi yacht club...u will see lots of sail boat onwers, skippers, and even crew members relaxing at the pub...make friends with them...and they may be looking for deck hands (meaning u do the odd jobs...suprisingly u will see manyh thai girls...oh, they are looking for fun in the sea!)...

boat owners apart, there will also be skippers looking for helpers...the skippers need to deliver the sail boat (ocean racers, etc) to charterers in phuket, one of them in the thai marine charterers at Lam Phrao...many of the boats would have just completed the langkawi regatta (ends on Nov 26, i think)....good luck

dana
