Hi Ali,
thank you for your kind answer.

My itinerary is still "work in progress", is easy to find on the web general informations about your country, more difficult to find specific informations. It's quite like in Italy!

Maybe you could help me in finding some informations about travellin' from Cairo to Aswan with the night sleep-train:

for example,
1) do you think we could find availability for tickets directly in Cairo Ramses Train Station, 3 days before the day we want to leave? Are those trains usually full?

2) do you know if the trains are working normally even in December 31/January 1 ?

Thank you in advance if you can help me.
I can't wait to see Egypt: any suggestion is welcome.

oh dear , you are visiting Egypt in peak time ! normally you can book for luxor one or two days at most in advance , but in peak times the trains are fully pre booked by tourist groups .. I do not know if you can find empty seats 3 days before that day or not ..
my advice is to have your tickets booked before you come to Egypt .. that is done by many travel agents right now , please check the following web sites :
http://www.egyptlegend.com/trainreservation.htm
http://www.safariegypt.com/
http://www.osoris.com/
http://www.egyptiants.net/tailor.asp

you will have to pay an extra fees for those companies beside the normal ticket price .
here is a good part , you can book the abela sleeper to luxor directly using their official web site
http://www.sleepingtrains.com
without paying extra fees to other third party company ..
just e-mail your booking request to the email in this site , If they reply with confirmation of your reservation, you can pick up the tickets and pay for them (in US Dollars or Euros) at the Abela Egypt sleeper reservation office at Cairo station. However, latest reports suggest that Abela aren't very good at replying to emails - if you have problems getting a response, either phone their reservation office on + (202) 574 94 74 or + (202) 574 92 74 (you'll be given a booking reference and can pick up and pay for the tickets at the Abela ticket window at the station in Cairo) or book through one of the agencies I have mentioned before ...

hmmm , where are my glasses ? I can not see alex - my dear city- in your schedule ? hmmmm , fix it please !
please feel free to ask any question , I wish you -and your husband- a good stay in Egypt :)
cheers ,
daydohx

great reply didox!
thanks a lot!

I have to say I've already try to book the train tickets with an agency, but the proposal was of 96USD for the one way trip for each person. It's almost the double-price of the ticket, isn't?

I've tried too to contact Sleepingtrains web site with a reservation e-mail, but I got no answer: I will call them by phone, thanks for the numbers.

Don't worry, we have Alexandria in our ideas: after our return to Cairo, we have to choose between a short trip to the Bahayria Oasis or a day trip to Alexandria: thank you in advance if you can suggest me what's the best to do in one short, small day in a great city!

Do you think it will be easy to reach El Alamein from Alexandria?
How much time you need for trip + visit to the war cemetery??

(I'm a pacifist at all, but I remember my gran-granpa in his old days sitting in his sofa and saying thos words only "ELALAMEI! ELALAMEI!!". I think I was present at the battle, my visit would be a sort of tribute to him, not to the stupid wars of past and present.)

your welcome , I havn't been to alamein before , but it is about 105 km west of alex. well , i'm not sure about the suitable transportaion method for you , but i can ask some people who have visited it ..
hmmmm , you can visit some nice places in one day in alex , but it is hard to go to alamien in the same day as you need to visit many places there ( German , Italian , Greek cemeteries , war museum..and i heared there is a wonderful beach there )..in alex you can visit the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina , Fortress of Qait Bey
, Roman Amphitheatre and the Catacombs ..

cheers ,
daydoh.

I have read so much about Egypt and finally have decided to visit Cairo and Alexandria. I have already a Hotel booked for 8 days at Cairo Marriott and am told that this is the best Hotel among the others along the River Nile.

I am looking forward to visit all the historic places and the important ones are The Grand Pyramids and the Egyption Museum. If anyone can give me more insight to where l should go as l have over 8 days in Cairo l will appreciate it very much.

I have heard that the traffice is horrendous in Cairo and so much smog. But l am still happy to visit this city and cruise on the Nile, etc.
