In an attempt to get as much help as possible we're repeating this yet again, so apologies if you've already come across it...
We’re planning on buying a campervan and travelling in the Australian outback for six months from Feb 2006.
We went on a similar trip a couple of years ago (that time we drove the Oodnadatta & Birdsville tracks), and bought a 1984 Toyota Hiace. It was easy to buy it in Perth, but we had problems selling in Darwin in June. (The Hiace was so reliable we’re thinking of buying another - any views?. Our limit is AU$8000.)
Do you know which city would be best to fly into and buy a van? We’re completely flexible.
Similarly, which is the best city in which to easily sell the van at the end of our trip (July), bearing in mind the issues with rego in different states? We can enter and leave Australia from different airports.
Thanks very much for any information!
Jon & Vicky
we bought ours in Cairns in Oct, and that was a mistake, no options, so the prices were high, so we're planning on selling it there next Sept, hopefully make some money back. ours was $6000, and we're happy w/ her, but in Brisbane/Sydney would've been less.
a friend did the research, and drove out of his way to get a Queensland rego b/c he decided it had the best benefits for reselling.
so w/ that, I'd suggest Brisbane for buying, and spring/summer in Cairns for selling--wish I'd known!
moonschein`s advice is really good. If u fly into cairns (tourist mecca) u will pay too much - likewise in sydney (coz Most ppl fly into sydney and buy a car there). Western Australia is the best place to buy a van price wise but also the hardest to sell (everyone knows the papers are shifty) but brisbane isn`t much of a tourist place so u will most likely get a good price there and your best bet for selling it would be in cairns or sydney (try to car market in kings cross).
