Hi, can anyone give us some advice and the best things to see and do in laos. our time is very limited, we will have a max of 2 weeks and will be entering laos from northern thailand (from chang mai) and will work our way down from there and then have to end up in bangkok to catch a flight. we will be going there in about a week or so.
any tips ye have would be great as we haven't even got a guide book at the mo(got nicked a few days ago)!
if anyone has anything to add on chang mai or how to get to laos it definately wont be wasted info either.
thanks alot, luciano.
find your way to chiang kong from chiang mai ...there should be no problem, and to enter Laos via this border crossing, take a ferry from Chiang Khong (20 baht)...long tail boats leave frequently throughout the day..On the Laos side, you can get your Laos visa (up to 15 days--30 days visas take longer and cost more) on the spot for about U.S. $30...From Huay Xai, you can either take a boat down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang, or you can take a bus to destinations further North (Luang Namtha). If you choose the boat option, you can either take a "slow" boat, which leaves only once a day in the morning by about 10:30, or a "speed" boat, which also leaves in the morning. By about 11:00 you can no longer catch any boats south and will have to spend the night in Huay Xai (good idea to buy ticket if you are planning to take the boat next day)...since, you only have 2 weeks, dont take the slow boat ( 2 days to Luang Prabang)...take the speed boat ( 6 hrs)..fare is about 1,000B if you buy it at the speedboat departure dock...
Luang namtha is less touristic...more into eco-tourism...generally people head for luang prabang, then move down to vientiane..savannakhet, pakse (more things to see) and exit out at Chong Mek...
thanks a million dana, thats great. chiang kong sounds like the way to go. do you know any good places to stay along the route (in luang prabang etc.)? and what is there to see in savannakhet and pakse?
thanks again for your help, luciano.
i stayed at the Baan Thip Guesthouse in chiang kong - close to the pier, convenient...and in luang prabang i stayed at mano guesthouse.
Luang prabang is the tourist capital of Laos...guidebooks are full of where u should go....but i liked the trip to muang ngoi...
maybe u should give a skip going down south, and instead explore this alternative:from chiang kong ( 1 day stop over?) cross over to huay xai and from here take slow boat ( 2 days with stop over at pakbeng)to luang prabang (maybe 3 days stop over ?, then off to ponsavan (2 days), then to vang vieng ( 2 days) and end up in vientiane (1 day ?)..and cross the friendship bridge back into thailand..via nongkai-udon thani (may be 1 day), then take train to BKK...just a suggestion...
