Okay, I have a question for Brendan, and everyone else who cares to add their money's worth to this...

The holidays (ie: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.) seem to be a bone of contention. They are too commercialized, they have "lost" their meaning, etc., etc., etc... Since these "organized" celebrations are no longer representative of their origins, what do you find to be worthy of the communal celebration?

Ooo! A Diatribe! I don't know about others here but for me you mentioned the very nature of the beast.

Thanksgiving: The annual celebration of the genocide of Native North Americans. Oh wow, yeah that is a great thing to celebrate! Pass the turkey!

Christmas: Taken from pagans by the christians to meld them into christian society. Mom I want an elmo doll!

Easter: The ressurection of Christ... somehow was translated into "Choclate Easter Bunnies".

How about as a community we celebrate life? It is general, everyone has it and you don't need to wear pants.

I've tried answering the question 3 times, and still come up short. I think it comes down to holidays being about getting together. Families just don't do that much anymore - for better or worse. So no matter who gets too drunk, too loud, angry, whiny, you name it - in the end, you're family. As one of my friends says to us: 'So I'm in jogging pants and my hair's a mess and the dishes aren't done. Tough! You're family!'

Although sometimes I just want to spend Christmas in Havana.

When you detest your relatives, spending even one minute in their presence is disgusting. I hate the festivals and holidays. They're too commercialised, and it means I have to put in an appearance in front of the relatives and make nice. I hate that. I'm not the communal sort.
